JERUSALEM — The Is-
rael Educational Prize was
awarded recently to Ameri-
can Mizrachi Women's Kfar
Batya Children's Village in
Raanana, near Tel Aviv, for
an inter-ethnic music proj-
ect, called an "experiment
in harmony."
Israel President Yitzhak
Navon, at a ceremony in his
home, presented the Minis-
try of Education and Cul-
ture's citation of apprecia-
tion to Mordechai Sobol, 27,
Kfar Batya's music in-

prize-winning program.

chance to visit more kinds of
synagogues, I was amazed
at the variety of melodies
that exist for each prayer.
Not only does each ethnic
group chant differently --
you get an Iraqi from
Baghdad and an Iraqi from
Mossul to hum the melody
of, say, 'Shalom Aleichem'
or `Yigdal Elohim Hai,' and
one will know what
the other is humming!
"At the Academy, I
noticed something else.
Maybe it was coincidence —

school youngsters, is one of
nine institutions through-
out Israel established and
maintained by American
Mizrachi Women.
The idea for the
award-winning project
occurred to Sobol "while
I was still at the Cantorial
Academy. It was obvious
to me that the liturgical
melodies I grew up with
were not the ones used in
the temple. SOme of them
sound more like Strauss
waltzes than anything
else! And that's under-
standable, when you

He proposed to set up
at Kfar Batya a class
composed of as many
ethnic groups as possi-
ble, devoted to research-
ing the mdsicar tradition
of the different cultures,
isolating the dimilarities
and the differences be-
tween the liturgy-of each
group.

The students share their
findings with each other in
open discussion. Thus, each
learns as much as possible
about the music of all the
other communities.
