NEW YORK — What will 1979 be like? Does the number 9 mean anything mor,e than any other number? The people who first went to California were called the Forty-Niners. Gold was found there in 1849. That's a long way back. But 1879 is not so far back. Only a hundred years ago. Everybody can re- member that. American Jews especially. That was the year Ulysses. Grant vis- ited Jerusalem. Remember old General Grant. Always puffing away at his cigar! He had visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem on a world tour. It was on his return from that world tour that there developed a third term boom for Grant for President, but it petered out. James Garfield instead was nominated and elected and shortly after his elec- tion, assassinated. Chester A. Arthur became President. With the tele- phone, you could call up and say you weren't corn- ing home for dinner. Speaking about dinner, a lot of fuss was made about it in 1879. The fact is the country was in something of an economic depression. It was in that year that Henry George came out with his recipe for making sure that everyone would have his dinner. His great work "Progress and Poverty" first appeared in 1879. He had a hard time getting it pub- lished, but it sold like hot cakes — over a million copies. George argued that the basic cause of poverty was land monopoly and he urged the single tax as the solu- tion. He said that land value is produced by the growth of population and so belongs to the whole people, so he would remove all taxes and take instead the land value as the single tax. No one would then be able to make any profits speculating in land, so land would be cheap and since there would be no tax on building, there would be a great deal of building. So rents would be very low and with the savings in rent, people would have money for other things, so produc- Travel Firm Appointee Seder & Synagogue Sor vices Conducted by Cantor SOLOMON/ SCHIFF sa.corvr THE KOSHER O TT YESTERDAY TODAY 6 'TOMORROW Reserve now for your PASSOVER .HOLIDAYS in an elegantly traditional atmosphere, featuring world renowned Cantors and lavish Seder meals.lnquire about our 9,10 & 12 night packages. So wages would rise and everyone who wanted work would have it. George made one of his first speeches about it be- fore the San Francisco Young Men's Hebrew Association. He said the real originator of the idea was Moses, who directed that every 50 years the land be redistributed. Some people who were to make history were born in 1879. There was a family in Russia named Bronstein. They had a child named Leon. He wasn't very Jewish minded and he didn't like the name Brons- tein. He changed it to Leon Trotsky. He became very prominent as you may re- member.
