Shmulewitz, Yeshiva Dean, 76 Michael Robert Mendel- JERUSALEM (JTA) — Rabbi Haim Shmulewitz, _ dean of the Mir Yeshiva, ' - died Jan. 1. He was 76. A product of the pre-war Lithuanian yeshiva world, Rabbi Shmulewitz was con- sidered a foremost Tal- mudist and leading expo- ' nent of the "Mussar" school — the teachings of self- discipline and religious phi- ' losophy developed in the Lithuanian yeshivot during the last century. "Mussar" talks in the yeshiva in Jerusalem's 4 Mea Shearim quarter used to attract hundreds of stu- dents each week. Rabbi Shmulewitz was born in Kovno and studied under Rabbi Shimon Shkop. In 1925 he moved into the Mir Yeshiva, became one of its top student-teachers, and eventually married — as was the custom in the yeshivot — the daughter of the dean, Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel. From 1936 he was head of the yeshiva. " Aaron Lipin, 72 Aaron _Lipin, retired fur- niture and lighting man- ufacturer's representative died Jan. 3 at age 72. Born in Rochester, N.Y., Mr. Lipin lived 68 years in Detroit. He was a member of Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith since 1938 and a past president of its bowling league. He was a past president of the metropoli- tan Detroit Bnai Brith Bowling Association and a past member of the board of governors of, the Interna- tional Bnai Brith Bowling Association. He leaves two sons, Richard and Donald; two daughters, Mrs. Darryl (Shari) Lieberman and Mrs. Martin (Barbara) Silver- man; a brother, Max; two sisters, Mrs. Rose LeNoble and Mrs. Bert Bassin, both of North Miami Beach, Fla.; and five grandchildren. Lev-Landau, 83, Artist and Poet NEW YORK (JTA) — Lev-Landau, an artist and Yiddish poet, died Jan. 7 at age 83. Born Samuel D. Landau in Warsaw, Poland, Lev- Landau was a landscape and figurative artist whose wo- ks featuring symbolic overtones were exhibited at shows at some of the major museums in this country. was a poet and at one was on the staff of the now defunct New York Yid- dish daily, The Day- Morning Journal, and also wrote for the Jewish Daily Forward. t( In Memory Of Our Beloved Wife and Mother sohn, a student at the Cooley Law School in Lans- ing, died Jan. 4 at age 24. MDA Cites Three HAIFA — A 22-year-old Israeli Arab and two Jewish pensioners were recently awarded the Dr. Baruch Nissenboim Memorial Prize at the Magen David Adorn Emanuel and Stella Celler Medical Center in Haifa. This award is granted by MDA, Israel's Red Cross Service, each year to three outstanding volunteers. Abdallah Abu Tarrous, son of a Haifa grocer, has been an active MDA volun- teer for the last four years. Besides his regular night duty at the MDA Haifa sta- tion, Abdallah is also a skil- led first aid instructor. In emergency, he also serves on an MDA Mobile Cardiac Rescue Unit, having suc- cessfully completed a rigor- ous course. Naomi Gottleiser, co- recipient of the Nissenboim Prize, is one of Magen David Adom's most senior volun- teers, having been a first aid volunteer for more than 40 years. The third recipient of the award, Shmuel Tepper, re- tired last year.
