Herbert Metz, Dental Inventor

Dr. Herbert H. Metz, a
nationally known maxillo-
facial prosthodontist, died
Dec. 29 at age 78. A native
of New York, Dr. Metz lived
54 years in Detroit.
Dr. Metz, who was the
chief of the prosthetic sec-
tion at Sinai Hospital of De-
troit since the hospital's in-
ception 25 years ago, be-
came the full-time dental
coordinator of Sinai's dental
tic in 1965, a position he
–1.(1 until his retirement in
1975.
Dr. Metz was honored on
his 75th birthday with a
fund to endow a new clinic
in his name. "The Herbert
H. Metz Maxillofacial
Prosthetic Clinic" is now in
full operation in the Blum-
berg Professional Office
Building of Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Metz played an
active role in the de-
velopment of "the man-
dibular staple implant."
The staple was invented
by Dr. Irwin A. Small
(also of Sinai Hospital),
but its practical applica-
tion required the
prosthetic attachment
and denture previously
perfected by Dr. Metz.
The greater part of Dr.
Metz's work consisted of the
rehabilitation of victims
with deformities caused by
accidents, birth defects or
cancer. He also developed a
technique to make silicone
look like human skin.
He was certified by the
state of Michigan in 1948 as
a prosthodontic specialist.
Over the years he presented
17 clinics, five annual lec-
tures on maxillofacial
prosthetics at the Univer-
sity of Indiana School of De-
ntistry. He also lectured at
the University of Detroit.
Dr. Metz authored and
co-authored several in-
structive publications
which were nationally rec-
ognized.
He designed a dental lab-
oratory at the women's di-
vision of the Detroit House
of Correction and trained at
least 25 inmates as dental
technicians.
From 1968 to 1970, Dr.
Metz organized a group
of volunteer dentists and
assistants from the Sinai
Hospital staff to partici-
pate in the United Foun-
dation Health-O-Rama
testing program for oral
health.
Lr. Metz was a past
N...„,resident of the American
Academy of Maxillofacial
Prosthetics.
Dr. Metz was graduated
from Tufts University Den-
tal School with a DMD de-
gree in 1923. Upon gradua-
tion he was honored with a
scholarship at the Univer-
sity of Minnesota. It was
there that he took a course
in complete dentures.
In 1925 he became associ-
ated with Dr. Clair Straith,
a specialist in plastic
surgery and maxillofacial
prosthetics.
During the war, Dr.
Metz served for three
years as chief of prosthe-
tics in two Army camps.
He was one of 25 dental
officers selected by the

government (out of 20,000
dentists across the coun-
try) to learn the art of_
making almost human-
looking artificial eyes out
of plastic instead of glass.
After several months of
intensive training at Hallo-
ran General Hospital in
New York, Dr. Metz became
director-in-charge of The
Percy Jones Eye Center in
Battle Creek.
Besides an active life as a
clinician, Dr. Metz was a
working member of many
other organizations, among
which were the American
Prosthodontic Society,
Richard H. Kingery
Prosthetic Group, Ameri-
can Cleft Palate Associa-

Free Loan Association has
reported that last year only
104 loans made by the asso-
ciation, totaling $13,000,
were not collectable, a 2.3

ANNE PEARLMAN

It was New Year's Eve one year ago
and the day was cold and gray,
then later in the evening my mother
passed away.

It was only two days before she laughed
and was happy in spirit.
How could she ever know death was approach-
ing,
you couldn't hear it.

It struck hard and fast and all was done,
but how was I to know
Her time had come and she had to go.
Dear God, I miss her so.
