songs, available from the
Lubavitch Center here and
from the Lubavitch
Hasidim in this country and
in England.
Like the previous record-
ings, there is something
especially unique about the
songs featured.
Every "Aya-yai-yai". and
"Tra-la-la" emerges, often
as a chant, regularly as an
invitation to rejoice in the
traditional observances of
the dedicated Hasidim.
In the latest "Chabad
Nigunim" recording is a
collection of songs-
featuring the boys of the
Chabad Choir and some
of the selections are par-
ticularly inspiring.

Needs of Dying and Families
Focus of Jewish Grief Parley

By BEN GALLOB
(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)

Participants in the Fifth
Interdisciplinary Educa-
tional Conference on Be-
reavement and Grief in
New York were told that the
rules which should guide
the therapist working with
a dying person must be
different from those the
therapist uses with patients
with chances of recovery
and that relatives of the
dying persons also need
careful professional atten-
tion.
Another key conclusion
emerging from the confer-
ence, co-sponsored by
Yeshiva University and the
Jewish Funeral Directors of
America and allied profes-
sions, was that many of the
specialists, instead of de-
termining what their
patients want, decide for
themselves.
The contention that the
therapy rules should be
"different" was submitted
by Dr. Edwin Sch-rieidman,
professor of thanatology
and director of- the labora-
tory for the study of life-
threatening behavior at the
University of California at
Los Angeles,
The conference was
organized to help profes-
sionals provide more ef-
fective service to persons
facing life-threatening
illness, imminent death
or bereavement. The con-
ference was organized to
be "an inter-professional
dialogue for those who
serve the bereaved," a
spokesman said.
• The experts attended a
workshop on "The counselor
confronts his own feelings
with death and bereave-
ment." Each then chose to
attend one of 12 workshops
concerning work with the
dying and work with their
families before and after be-
'reav'ement.
Dr. Schneidman told the
professionals one of the
types of therapy for the
dying involves situations
where the therapist "does
not have the luxury of tine"
and the goal of "increased
comfort" needs a different
kind of "benign interven-
,tion." The dying person
needs to "tie up loose in-
trapsychic threads," rather
than work on long-term go-
als, a therapist might con-
sider for a physically
healthy person.
Hence, he bends the rules
by behavin -g intimately,

encouraged and publishing
it was' assisted by the
Schaver Foundation. Mrs.
Morris (Emma Lazaroff)
Schaver continued her deep
interest in, the work of the
Chabad and of the
Lubavitch Hasidim with
funds to publish this Siddur
to memorializeTher hus-
band,_Morris Schaver, and
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. -
Jacob Lazaroff, who were-
life-long affiliates ,of the
Lubavitchers. .
The Siddur has a special
distinction of containing a
guide to the Hebrew al-
phabet and assistance in
perfecting reading and
chanting of the prayers.
The two selections under
the title "Nigun la'Shabbos
v'Yom Tov" at• once invites
the interest of the listener.
The chants, the chorals, the
accompaniments to dancing
keep the tempo alive.
The most impressive of
the selections is the "Kad-
ish by Rabbi Levi Yitzhak
of Berdichev" which has be-
come famous wherever
there are Jews who sing or
listen to traditional chants.
The words and the Nigun,

stressing he did not mean
sex intimacy. In an ordinary
psychotherapeutic situa- •
tion, he would fend off
patient questions as to
whether he was married,
"but to a dying patient I
would say yes, show pic-
tures of my family, even
hold the patients' hands
during trying moments, or
embrace 114-41 or her."
He stressed the Are-
mendous problems some
patients experience in
expressing their feelings
to those around them in-
volved in their own lives.
He said the feelings of
such a patient "is not a
distinct, clear-cut ph-
ase." He said specialists
in the field "must always
remember- that in' the
long run, the survivors
are victims, too," and that
careful attention must be
paid to them while work-
ing with their dying rela-
tives.
Prof. Harriet A. Finer of
the university's school of so-
cial work, who coordinated
the conference, said the con-
ference demonstrated that
professionals have to listen
to clients "to find out what
their needs are." She said
"too often we have our own
ideas as to what a client
needs from us and what we
feel is our obligation to pro-
vide." She said "we think we
are providing a service"
when in fact the client "may
feel he needs something
quite different. We must
really listen without pre-
conceived notions.",
