Jewish Film Folk Involved
in Variety of Movie Roles

By HERBERT G. LUFT

(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)

HOLLYWOOD — Gina
Blumenfeldt, a young New
York film maker who inde-
pendently has produced
16mm educational films for
schools, colleges and uni-
versities, came to my office
at the studios to screen a
documentary feature which
deals with survivors of the
Holocaust in a series of in-
terviews taped by her in the
United States and in Israel.
The narrative starts with
youthful adults in Eretz Is-
rael and in retrospect tells
us their story or the story of
their parents, brothers and
sisters.
Richard Lester, the 46-
year-old Philadelphia-born
film director who guided
some pictures with Peter
Sellers and the late Zero
Mostel, and made a name
for himself with two British
Beatles films and "The
Three Musketeers," is now
in Spain where he dupli-
cates the locale of "Cuba"
for a picture set against the
final days of the Batista dic-
tatorship and the early
months of the Castro re-
gime. "Cuba" is termed a
love story and stars Sean
Connery and Arlene
Sellers. Alex Winitsky pro-
duced it for United Artists.
Judd Hirsch plays
the gypsy wild man who
tries to kill his own son
out of jealousy and is in-
stead taken apart by a
shotgun blast in the cli-
max of "King of the Gyp-
sies," which marks his
first starring screen role.
At the time he was film-
ing, Hirsch appeared
nightly on Broadway in the
Neil Simon play, "Chapter
Two," an autobiographical
story in which he actually
portrays the author himself.
Similarly, his co-star Shel-
ley Winters worked in a
New York stage production,
with both of them daily al-
ternating in the media.
Erich, Segal, whose first

novel, "Love Story," sold
more than nine million
copies in 33 languages, with
the film version starring Ali
MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal
one of the top 10 grossing
pictures of all time, now
sees the sequel, titled "O-
liver's Story," appear on the
screen revealing the an-
guish of the young man
after the death of his wife
Jenny. The touching yarn
doesn't have the impact of
"Love Story."

Martin Landau, cur-
rently associated with Jack
Garfein's Actors and Direc-
tors Lab in Hollywood, por-
trays a key role in
American-International
Pictures', "Meteor," cur-
rently completed at MGM
studios in Culver City. The
picture deals with an orbit-
ing satellite armed with nu-
clear rockets developed to
defend the earth from any
threatening planetary
body.
Bernardi
Herschel
switches from the screen to
the local stage when he will
appear in the West Coast
premiere of Herb Gardner's
play, "The Goodbye People,"
a comedy.
