Arson, Bias Suspected in Drancy Blaze
i
PARIS (JTA) — The fire
'6.7/at
t
destroyed a large
synagogue in the north
'aris suburb of Drancy last
week is believed by local
Jewish community leaders
to have been the work of ar-
sonists motivated by anti-
Semitism.
One of the leaders, Michel
Besadoux, told reporters
that the synagogue was
broken into twice in recent
weeks. He also recalled that
the office of the Zionist
youth group Betar was

Students Disrupt
Israel 30th Fete,
Are Suspended
CHICAGO (JTA) — Five
students at the University
of Illinois Circle Campus
have been suspended Tor
violently disrupting a cam-
pus celebration of Israel's
30th anniversary of inde-
pendence last May, it was
announced by Robin Hand-
elman, chairman of the Col-
lege Age Youth Services
(CAYS) committee of the
Jewish Federation of Met-
ropolitan Chicago, and Syl-
via Neil, American Jewish
Congress leghl counsel and
attorney for the students
who brought the charges.
The five students were
among about 100 Arab-led
students who broke up the
May 11 celebration by sh-
outing, fighting and de-
stroying property. Univer-
sity police were unable to
contain the disrupters, who
earlier had pledged to hold a
"peaceful counterdemonst-
ration."
The violence at Circle
Campus last May marked
the fifth consecutive year
that Arab-inspired groups
had attempted to disrupt
university-approved stu-
dent celebrations of Israel's
independence sponsored by
Bnai Bri-th Hillel Founda-
tion and the CAYS commit-
tee.
with Palestinian sym-
pathizers.
The area where the
synagogue stood has
dread memories for
French Jews. It was the
site of a notorious transit
camp where Jews were
rounded up for deporta-
tion by the Nazis during
World War II.
(In New York, Philip M.
Klutznick, president of the
World Jewish Congress,
said "More than 61,000 per-
sons were taken from
Drancy to death camps. The
burning of the synagogue is
but another in a series of
anti-Semitic outrages per-
petrated by neo-Nazi ele-
ments . . . . Neo-Nazism is a
threat not only in France
but in many countries to-
day," Klutznick said and
"governments everywhere
should recognize neo-
Nazism for the evil it is.")
