"There are several var-
iant forms of the nusah
ha-tefillah — the
prescribed order and text
of the prayers. The most
widely followed are
Nusakh_ Ashkenaz,
Nusakh Sepharad, the
"P oilishe" Nusakh,
Nusakh Teman and
Nusakh Ari. The basic
form and text of the
prayers — having been
formulated and ordained
by the Anshei Knesset
HaGedola (Men of the
Great Assembly) and by
the Sages of the Mishna
and Talmud — is com-
mon to them all; in this
there is no disparity or
divergence among them.
"They vary only in detail,
such as the order of some
prayers, small differences
in textual phraseology, and
the omission or inclusion of
some piyutim (liturgical
hymns).
"According to the Kabala,
there are, in fact, 12 nus-
khaot — one for each Tribe
of Israel, in accordance with
the unique and distinct
spiritual quality of each.
Similarly, there are in
heaven 12 "gates" corre-
sponding to the 12 Tribes.
The prayersof each, teaches
the Kabala, can ascend to
heaven only 'through its
particular gate and by
means of its specific
nusakh.
"So too, the Zohar states,
the 12 gates in the Temple
court corresponded to the 12
Tribes. Upon each gate was
inscribed the name of one
Tribe. If a member of a par-
ticular Tribe wished to
enter the Temple court
through the gate of his
Tribe, he was able to do so.
If, however, he attempted to
go through a gate other
thane his own, the door
closed upon him and he
could not pass through."
In the Uforatzto Journal,
organ of the Lubavitch
movement, lengthy arti-
cle, "A Ne* Translation —
Who Needs It?" evaluates
the new Siddur and Rabbi
Mangel's two years of labors
on the new translation and
states:
"After long years of an-
ticipation and planning,
and over two years of verit-
able single-handed full time
effort, the English transla-
tion of the Lubavitch Siddur
(Nusakh Ari) has finally
been published. The work of
