Dramatic Story of Incarceration in Russia
Told by Menahem Begin in 'White Nights'

One of the world's most
interesting personalities
had a role of battling for jus-
tice in the land which he
now serves as head of state
as well as during the
dramatic era in the struggle
against oppression in Rus-
sia. Menahem Begin relates
his experiences as a pris-
oner in Russia in "White
Nights" (Harper and Row).
One of the most impres-
sive accounts of agonies in a
number of Russian prisons
as well as USSR concentra-
tion camps, "White Nights"
is a portrayal in an impres-
sive literary style of a period
in the life of Israel's prime
minister which was intro-
ductory to his commencing
his notable Israel political
activity.
In September 1940, Hit-
ler's panzer divisions had
run roughshod over the low
countries and brought
France to her knees. His
Luftwaffe was making
murderous nightly bombing
strikes over London. Stalin,
due to the suspect Soviet-
German non-aggression
pact, had added eastern Po- -
land and the Baltic states to
Mother Russia's domain.
Menahem Begin was 26
years old, an active
Zionist living near the
town of Vilna in
Lithuania. He had made
no secret of his political
sentiments and had at-
tracted 'the attention of
the Soviet secret police,
the NKVD. They had is-
sued the first of several
"invitations" to him — to
"chat;" they said. Begin
had politely declined.
The Soviets soon lost pa-
tience and a few weeks
later arrested him with-
out a warrant.
It is the extraordinary
caliber of Begin's intellect,
the tenacity of his faith and

his capacity for sheer physi-
cal endurance that allowed
him to survive the "white
nights" of both the inter-
rogators' floodlights and the
endless daylight of the Sibe-

steel in Begin's character is
his frame of mind as he
faced his first Russian in-
terrogator — a circum-

most men to terrified

" NEW YORK — Both
Anwar Sadat and Menahem
Begin dropped two positions
in the 1978 Gallup Poll of
most admired mpn from
their positions in 1977.
Sadat dropped from sec-
ond to fourth place and
Begin from seventh to ninth
place in the 1978 poll.
President Jimmy Carter
topped the list both years.
He was followed in the 1978
poll by Pope John Paul II,
Billy Graham, Sadat,
Gerald Ford, Ronald Re-
agan, Edward Kennedy,

Sadat Isolated?

CAIRO (ZINS) — The iso-
lation of Egypt by the Arabs
following the Camp David
accords was reflected in the
silent reaction of King Has-
san of Morocco and
President Namayri of Su-
dan. Both had warmly
applauded Sadat's visit to
Jerusalem in 1977.

Economic Fears

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — An
unnamed European indus-
trialist says Egyptians fear
economic collaboration with
Israel will overwhelm the
Egyptian economy.
