Addressing the gather- ing, Ms. Peters said: From Arthur Rubinstein and Leonard Bernstein to Isaac Stern, Yehudi Menu- hin, David and Igor Ois- trakh, we have all per- formed free for our beloved Israelis. The torch will be carried by members of Masada, the youth movement of the Zionist Organization of. America. "And so it is with the He- brew University. While we recognize that the univer- sity had to first deal with the pragmatic problems of a fledgling society, in recent years it has moved to the fore and is one of Israel's great cultural proprietors. Under its aegis, the humanities and the sciences are united in a common environment of support and encouragement. Thus, the Hebrew University has the place to nuture talent as well as intellect. "Today, young men and women are taking courses of study leading towards the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at the Hebrew University Department of Musicology. Others are car- rying out extensive re- search on the music of the Jewish people and the Near East. The electronic music laboratory is conducting re- search in the development of sound production equip- ment and electronic musical composition. Finally, stu- dents at the electronic lab- oratory for musicological research are engaged in re- search to measure the musi- cal parameters of tone, pitch, volume and intensity, as well as the musical parameters of language. "These are programs that stimulate a high degree of musical achievement and will assure continuous pro- gress from generation to generation."
