The Moscow Interna- tional Book Fair opened "under a cloud of distrust and in an atmosphere of censorship and repression," Dr. Jacob Kabakoff, editor of the Jewish Book Annual, writes`. "On the other hand, the Jerusalem fair provided a leading forum for open cultural and literary inter- change." The Moscow event under- scored "the role of the book under freedom," Dr. Kabakoff notes. "It provided a remarkable demonstra- tion of the yearning of Rus- sian Jews for books of Jewish interest. The Jewish exhibits were visited by thousands of persons, many of whom pleaded for books which they themselves could read and which they could use to teach their children abqut Judaism. The visitors were not per- mitted to purchase books, but the fact that many of the items disappeared indicates how deep is the hunger for and information about enlightenment Jewish life." A total of 845 works of Jewish interest published in America, Israel and Great Britain during the past year are annotated in seven bibliographies in English, Hebrew and Yid- dish. The bibliographies cover American Jewish non-fiction and fiction, Jewish juveniles, American Hebrew books, Yiddish works, Anglo-Jewish books, and selected books on Judaica from Israel. Dr. Kabakoff says the Jerusalem fair was the largest ever in scope both in exhibition space and international atten- dance. It attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors from 43 countries, with the largest number com- ing from America. "Israel in American Fiction," by Harold U.
