Israeli Humor in French? Mats Qui!
Among the offerings this
year from book publishers is
a gem from Stock (France),
entitled "0 Israel — 30 Ans
d'Humor (Oh Israel — 30
Years of Humor).
Printed in French, the
paperbacked book contains
stories and anecdotes about
Israelis, olim and tourists to
Israel. Author Mark Hillel
includes the following,
which appear here in rough
translation:
"On the kibutz, one eats
chicken on two occasions:
when one (a person) is sick,
or when the chicken is sick."
"What is a Zionist? It is
a Jew, who, with the
money of a second Jew,
tries to send the son of a
third Jew to live in Is-
rael."
"What's black and white,
has two eyes and is Jewish?
Moshe Dayan and Sammy
Davis, Jr."
"At customs. A man
comes through proclaiming
he has five refrigerators to
declare. The customs agent
asks, 'What do you plan to
do with them?'
"The immigrant: 'I must
have them — one for meat,
another for dairy products

"The customs agent:
know. You cannot cook a
lamb in its mother's milk.'
"'You also know then
that on Passover, we use
different utensils than we
use all year long. I need two
more (refrigerators), milk
and meat, for the eight days
of Passover.'
"The customs agent:
'Absolutely. But the fifth?'
The immigrant, whisper-
ing: 'And if one day I have a
desire to eat a slice of ham,
where will I put it?'"
On another topic, a
woman's coming of age,
author Judy Blume is
creating a sensation. Al-
ready a best-selling
author of juvenile fiction,
Ms. Blume has just pub-
liShed her first adult
novel, "Wifey." Pub-
lished by G. P. Putnam's
Sons, the book is a novel
about a suburban
Iranian Rebels
Reject Israel
NEW YORK (ZINS) —
Ayattollah Ruhollah Kho-
meini, the exiled Iranian
religious leader who is lead-
ing the groups opposed to
the rule of the Shah of Iran,
told a CBS interviewer re-
cently that "We reject Is-
rael."
He said, "We are opposed
to- Israel as long as Israel is
at war with the Arab states.
We will not send oil to Is-
rael."
honsewife's search for
her identity.
Acclaimed by her young
readership for the accurate
reflection of their own lives
in her books, Ms. Blume
captures in "Wifey" the pic-
ture of marriage in the '70s.
She states: "My books deal
with situations that are
familiar to me. I tell a story
by putting myself in the
character's shoes and ask-
ing, how would I feel . .
what would I do . . . if this
happened to me."
The candidness of
"Wifey" surely will cause a
wave of introspection
among the adult readers of
her new novel.
On a related topic,
Nancy Friday pursues a
daughter's search for
identity in relation to her
mother in her new book,
"My Mother/My Self."
Published by Delacorte
Press, Ms. Friday's study
probes various stages of
a woman's life and the
variables that affect it.
The book is based on in-
terviews and written in con-
sultation with leading
authorities. "My Mother/
My Self' is an important
comment on the status of
women in our society.
