told a Midwest regional
meeting of the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith.
Rabbi Rosenthal, who
heads the ADL's Latin
American affairs depart-
t, has just returned
a visit to Brazil,
ivia, Peru and Ven-
ezuela. Although hopeful

that democracy will gain
strength in Latin America,
Rabbi Rosenthal asserted
that the Nazi war criminals
who found haven in the
region and their supporters
pose a continuing threat to
efforts to re-establish'
democracy in the Southern
Hemisphere.
- He expressed his concern
that if the German govern-
ment permits the statute of
limitations on war crimes to
expire at the end of 1979,

Speaking of the former
commander of the
Sobibor concentration
camp, Gustav Franz
Wagner, Rabbi Rosent-
hal expressed optimism
that the Supreme .Court
of Brazil would grant the
German government's
request for his extradi-
tion.
Wagner, who has lived in
Sao Paulo since fleeing
Getmany, was arrested ear-
lier this year after a Nazi
meeting outside, Rio de
Janeiro.
Rabbi Rosenthal told the
group that the most vexing
problem with which the
ADL's Latin American af-
fairs department is now con-
fronted is that of political
prisoners in Argentina and
those who have disappeared
in that country.
Relatives and friends of
Jews in Argentina hiave
been appealing to -ADL for
help in locating the disap-
peared and securing the re-
lease of those detained-
without charges.
More than 1,000 such
cases have been regis-
tered with the ADL.
Rabbi Rosenthal indi-
cated that the problems
of disappearances and
_political detentions are
affecting all segments of
it5oviLS, and
are not specifically
Jewish problems.
The leading human
rights group in Argentina
(The Permanent Assembly
on Human Rights) has
submitted to the govern-
ment more than 3 ,00•0
names of documented cases
of disappeared _persons, he
said. Newspaper adver-
tisements appear with some
frequency requeSting that
the government explain the
disappearance of specifi-
cally named Argentine citi-
zens.

Aids Observant
NEW YORK — Follow-
ing a law suit brought by
the National Jewish Com-
mission on Law and Public_
Affairs (COLPA), a New
York State Supreme Court
justice ordered the City of
New York to set up a rea-
sonable alternative for 160
Sabbath observers to take a
civil service exam.
The city had originally
proposed Switching the 9:30
a.m. Saturday exam to 5:30
a.m. Friday so that the
eight-hour exam could be
concluded before sundown
Friday. •
After the judge's- ruling,
the Sabbath observers took
the exam on Sunday.

A Russian Line?

report that Russian officials
seem resigned to a peace be-
tween Israel and Egypt
based on the Camp David
accords.

Israeli participation and
attendance at the 1980
Olympic Games.

the Russians also told the
delegation that 98 percent

visas.
