But, instead of returning to Uruguay, he decided to settle in Brazil. There he befriended the governor of the state of. Parana who appointed him chief of the state's investi- gation of the civil and politi- cal police. • Erdstein recounts viv- idly his career as a Brazi- lian cop, claiming, among others, the capture of Franz Paul Stangl; the former commandant of Treblinka, who was re- sponsible for the murder of 700,000 innocent people. After World War II, an order of transmittal from Treblinka to Berlin signed by "Stangl was found that lists "among the items he sent from the camp by rail were 25 freight cars of women's hair, 248 freight cars of clothing and 400,000 gold watches. ' At the request of the Bonn government Franz Paul Stangl was extradited to Germany where he was sen- tenced to life imprisonment. Erdstein relates that he uncovered in Brazil centers of Nazi activities and hide- outs where Hitlerite crimi- nals, like Dr. Joseph Mengele,_ met to conspire agaiiist the present German regime and devise schemes for strengthening their influence in South America. , $3 25 • • • • In one of the jails, he re- laths, he shared a cell with the Greek ship-tycoon, - Aristotle Onasis, who was imprisoned for refusing to sign a blank check for - a charity of Eva Duarte (the mistress of Juan Peron then Argentina's Minister of Labor). In addition, he tracked down Nazi counterfeiters and forgers; uncovered localites dominated and intimidated by Nazi crim- inals; and revealed, "The Nazis were well- organized throughout South America, taking orders from higher ups — all the way to Martin Bormann who still called the shots." As a result of his Activi- ties, Erdstein had been harassed, threatened, at- tacked, and once seriously wounded. Yet, as his anti-Nazi ac- tivities became known, he began receiving requests for information from law enforcement agencies, em- bassies, and tips from indi- viduals informing him of the whereabouts of fugitive Nazis. Erdstein insists that he located Martin Bormann's hiding place, confronted him and identified him by his finger prints. Unfortu- nately, the criminal eluded him. The question often asked, "How was it possible for so many Nazis to . get away from Germany and reach safely South America?" Erdstein answers this ves- tion: ". . . many Nazis enlisted the help of the Vat- ican, copying the methods and routes used by British intelligence in rescuing Jews during the -war.
