Cantor Barkin, who
has achieved an out-
standing reputation as a
cantor and concert per-
former, came to Congre-
gation Shaarey Zedek in
1969 succeeding Cantor
Sonenklar as cantor of
the congregation.

Cantor Barkin's concert
appearances have taken
him throughout the United
States and into Canada,
Mexico, Israel and many
European countries. He per-
formed with many major
symphony orchestras.
Moving to Washington,
D.C.,
D.C. after some years on
the
Coast, he made his
debut with the National
Symphony in 1950 and per-
formed for three United
States Presidents. For
nearly three decades prior
to corning to Shaarey Zedek,
Cantor Barkin served prom-
inent congregations in the
United States. His cantorial
career began at the Geary
Street Temple in San Fran-
cisco.
Cantor - Barkin played
an important leadership
role in Shaarey Zedek's
sponsoring the
Jerusalem Symphony
program in-4975; in the
congregation's sponsor-
ing and launching the
American career of Rus
sian :violinist Alexander'
Treger.
He organized, prepared
and performed in the com-
memorative concert celeb-
rating the 25th anniversary
of I-Srael independence. In
1972 he was instrumental
in the development of a con-
cert sponsored by the cul-
tural commission (co-
sponsored with Temple Is-
rael) in which he was a lead-
ing soloist.
Cantor Barkin's first De-
troit recital was presented
by the music and drama di-
vision of the Cultural
Commission when he was
accompanied by his brother
Leo, a pianist, in 1969. The
following year he planned
and participated in a con-
cert of special tribute to the
late Mr. Dan Frohman, on
his 25th anniversary pre-
senting a world premiere of
"The Holy Sabbath," a sac-
red service by Mr. Frohman.
Cantor Barkin has di-
rected the- cultural com-
mission's music home
series. In 1970 he was
chairman of the South-
field Arts Council and in
1971 was chairman of its
music committee.

In 1975 Cantor Barkin
was the recipient of a Koved
Award Citation, along with
the congregation. The cita-
tion was presented to Can-
tor Barkin at the Cantor's
Assembly Convention "in
appreciation for the extra-
ordinary efforts which he
extended to help provide the
funds which had made
possible the publication, re-
search, education and
scholarship aid programs of
the Cantors Assembly." In
1972 the "Shaarey Zedek
Jacob Barkin Scholarship"
at the Cantors Institute of
the Jewish Theological
Seminary was established.
A member of a musical
family, Cantor Barkin
studied at the Toronto Con-
servatory and Eastman
School of Music, then , pur-
sued a career in the United
