Lebanese Christian Leaders Blast U.S., Support Israel

NEW YORK — Dory
Chamoun, the son of
Camille Chamoun, former
president of Lebanon who
remains a leader of the
Christian community, and
Dr. Charles Malik, former
Lebanese Ambassador to
the United States, recently
spoke to Writers and Artists
for Peace in the Middle
East.
Both Chamoun and Malik
discount the notion that
Lebanon suffered a civil
war. "What happened in
Lebanon," stated Dr. Malik,
"is that the PLO declared
war on Lebanese civilians, a
majority of whom are Chris-
tians."
Both Malik and Chamoun
described the Syrians as
Soviet clients who simply
wish to extend the USSR's
influence in the Middle
East. Chamoun added that
Syria camouflaged its in-
tention to annex Lebanon
by first subduing the PLO
which threatened to assume
too much power in Lebanon.
He believes that all
minorities in the Middle
East face extinction without
the deterrent of a strong and

Chamoun and Malik also
agree that no peace in the
Middle East is possible
without the resettlement of
the Palestinian Arabs
throughout the Arab states.
Each one rejected the
suggestion of a Palestinian
state on the West Bank and
in Lebanon, calling the PLO
dangerous and malignant
clients of the Soviet Union.

Both leaders questioned
America's prompt and
peremptory admonition of
Israel after the latter's in-
vasion .of southern Lebanon
in the spring of 1978, and
the insistence on replace-
ment by UNIFIL troops. By
contrast, Chamoun and
Malik are amazed by appar-
ent American indifference
to the presence of a Syrian
invasion force.

Meeting with reporters at
the State Department, the
new envoy said he told
Vance during their "brief,
pleasant chat" that "we re-
member that despite the
current difficulties in our
relations, Israel has no bet-
ter friend or a more gener-
ous one than the American
people."

He said he spoke of U.S.
contributions to Israel and
that he would try to "over-
come" the present difficul-
ties between the two coun-
tries "and explain our posi-
tion to the American gov-
ernment. I think he (Vance)
agrees with what I said to
him," Evron added. He told
the reporters that he and
Vance "did not. touch on
matters of substance" dur-
ing their conversation.
