TEL AVIV — The elec-
tion of Rabbi Bezalel Zolti
for the office of chief rabbi of
Jerusalem was supported a
year ago by the Mayoi of
Jerusalem Teddy Kollek
and the Labor Party. Rabbi
Zolti promised not to adopt'
extreme religious meas-
ures, but it did not last long
until Rabbi Zolti acted
against some hotels in
Jerusalem.
Rabbi Zolti demanded
from the hotels not to use
the elevator on Sabbath and
holidays and not to serve
foreign drinks, not to smoke
and not to make any ac-
counts and bills on those Oc-
casions. He also insisted
that luxury tourist hotels,
which are frequented,
mostly by non-Jewish for-
eigners, close the bar and
the swimming pool on Sab-
bath and holidays. Cleaning
should be done by Arabs and
food served from the reli-
gious slaughterhouse in
Jerusalem.
The chief rabbi made
clear, that hotels which did
not submit to these condi-
tions, would not receive a
kosher certificate. No wed-
dings could be performed in
such hotels. These sanctions
have caused great bitter-
ness, even among religious
Jews. Mayor Kollek felt de-
ceived and tries by all
means to cancel these or-
ders.
Some hotel owners had
to submit to the orders, in
order to continue wed-
ding and other cere-
monies. Others, like the
Hilton Hotel, refused.
Some religious leaders in
Jerusalem criticized the ex-
treme demands of Rabbi
,Zolti. The Vice Mayor, the
former, Chief Rabbi of
Johannesburg, Prof.
Yizhak-Levy Rabinowitz
said that it was enough that
the kitchens of the hotels
were kosher. If the hotels
were to comply with the re-
cent orders of Chief Rabbi
Zolti, they could hardly-
exist.

Not only is the Ashkenazi
Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem
Zolti severe and strict. The
Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Is-
rael Ovadia Yosef has sent a
memo, that rabbis, who
conduct wedding cere-
monies, should not look at
brides and women guests,
who come to the wedding
with low cut dresses and
robes with short sleeves. In
these cases rabbis and can-
tors should lobk in their
prayer books and disregard
the bride and women
guests, who are not decently
clothed. 1
