NCCJ Initiates Poll of U.S. Discrimination

MEN

NEW YORK— The Na-
tional Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews has an-
nounced that the national
research firm of Louis Har-
ris and Associates has
undertaken an in depth
survey to determine the
shape of racial and religious
prejudice and discrimina-
tion in America. The study
will be one of the most com-
prehensive ever conducted.
The survey is a special
project of the NCCJ's 50th
anniversary observance.

The survey is being con-
ducted among a national
cross-section of 1,650
whites, special oversamples
of 775 blacks and 275
Jewish people, 450 white
Catholics, and 850 white
Protestants.
In addition, a parallel
study among 265 leaders
is being undertaken, in-
cluding 110 community
leaders, 102 corpor‘te
leaders, and 53 national
black leaders.
The study will document
the changes that have taken
place in white and black
attitudes since the civil
rights movement captured
the center stage in the coun-
try 15 years ago. in 1963.
The Harris firm conducted a
landmark study at that

.

In 1967, 10.2 percent of
all families in Israel /lived at
a density of three or more
persons per room. A large
proportion of these families
were immigrants from Mos-
lem countries. By 1973,
about 6.2 percent of all
families still lived in such
conditions.

The NCCJ study also will
probe some of the more re-
cent developments, includ-
ing the recent Bakke deci-
sion by the U.S. Supreme
Court, the concept of affir-
mative action, and attitudes -
toward integration in em-
ployment,, housing, and
education.

Additionally, the survey
will measure and analyze
white and black attitudes
toward the minority
Spanish-American group,
and for the first time, per-
ceptions about Catholics. It
will update changes in atti-
tudes toward Jews and
women, thus providing a
comprehensive inventory of
the state of prejudice and
discrimination in the coun-
try.
"Fifty years ago,
America was facing a
crisis in which 'bigotry
and hate over the Al
Smith presidential cam-
paign had divided the
country," recalled. Dr.
David Hyatt, NCCJ
president. "The NCCJ
was born out of that
crisis. We mobilized the
knowledge of social sci-
entists, the techniques of
educators and the moral
dynamism of religious

people for a long-range
educational program to
bring people of diverse
backgrounds to work to-
gether for the common
good.
"Now as we begin our sec-
ond half-century of service
for human rights and better
intergroup relations, the
NCCJ, and indeed the
entire natien, needs to know
the nature and dimensions
of prejudice and discrimina-
tion in our country. Special
grants from corporations
concerned about the viru-
lent forms of prejudice and
intergroup relations have
enabled us to sponsor this
major undertaking, the re-
sultS of which will be used
by the NCCJ as a planning
and " programming tool for
our work in the future," said
Dr. Hyatt.
Dr. Hyatt said that the
NCCJ would make the re-
sults of the survey available
to the public, including
civic, governmental, reli-
gious, corporate, educa-
tional and community lead-
ers.

supporters of the study are
