It is popularly claimed at
Hanuka that the number
"eight" represents the eight
days during which the
miracle of the oil, enough
only for one day, lasted
eight days, This places the
commentaries on the codes
in a difficult position to ex-
plain why, the festival
should not be one of seven
days since there had al-
ready been enough oil for
one day.
Indeed, there are many
explanations to resolve this
problem, including the one
which claims that finding
even the one cruse of oil was
in itself a miracle.
Some claim that while the
number seven represents
. the creation of the physical
world in Genesis, the extra
day indicates the tran-
scendental feature of the
universe in the image of the
Almighty.
Obviously, the original
threat in the story of
Hanuka was not a physical
one but a cultural and reli-
gious one. Therefore, the
eighth day represented the
victory of the spirit which
Hariuka represents.
SOrne claim that the
number eight represents
the eight special vestments
worn by the High Priest. As
a mode _ l of humanity, the
pried dins represents the
higher meaning of man
above nature.
It is also claimed that the
eight days or the eight can-
dles are a parallel to the
eighth day of a boy's life on
which the circumcision
takes place raising him to a
spiritual level as a member
of the covenantal people.
Some people' prefer to
light oil wicks instead of
candles because the miracle
of Hanuka involved light
coming from oil. Thus the
wicks burning from oil come
`American
Labor
Supports Israel'
NEW YORK (JTA)
The American labor move-
ment will continue to stand
with Israel, Lane Kirkland,
secretary-treasurer of the
AFL-CIO, told more than
1,500 labor and industry
leaders from across the
United States gathered in
New York at a State of Is-
rael Bonds meeting.
The occasion of the meet-
ing was a tribute dinner
several nights ago for
William H. Syin, president
of the Retail Clerks Inter-
national Union, AFL-CIO.
The 1,500 leaders regis-
tered $15 million in Israel
Bonds purchases. This
presented purchases made
at 18 prior events through-
out the United States and
Canada in the past several
months.
Gen. Aharon Yariv,
former head of Israel mili-
tary intelligence and direc-
tor of the Institute for
Strategic Studies at Tel
Aviv University, presented
Wynn with the Prime
Minister's Medal. Wynn
headed a delegation of his
union on a visit to Israel last
June.
closer to representing the
original miracle.
Secondly, olive oil, such
as used in the original men-
ora of Moses' Tabernacle,
was a symbol of the people of
Israel since the oil is pro-
duced by crushing the olive.
The Midrash states that the
light shines for the people of
Israel when the people are
crushed (Exodus Rabbah
T'tzaveh).
Also, oil was the element
used in olden times for the ,
vehicle of _anointing kings
and consecrating holy ob-
jects. Furthermore, the oil
was a symbol of the Jewish
hope in the Messiah.
The very word "Messiah"
means "anointed one" and
indicates the coming of
a king who would be
"anointed" and thus be-
comes the symbol and the
vehicle of the final deliv-
erance of the Jewish people
and the establishment of
universal peace for all
mankind.
