JERUSALEM — Hanuka
celebrates the spiritual and
military victory, 22 cen-
turies ago, of a few faithful
Jews • over their as-
similationist brethren and
many Hellenist Syrians of
the Seleucid Empire.
The long guerrilla war of
the Jews — initially for
religious freedom, and later
for national liberation —
erupted following Seleucid
decrees forbidding upon
pain of death the obser-
vances of Judaism. The
Holy Temple in Jerusalem
was defiled. The Sabbath
was systematically desec-
rated. The ritual of circum-
cision was prohibited.
Torah scrolls were burned.
Jews were forced to worship

pagan idols and to eat for-
bidden foods, or be tortured
to death.
The most direct cause of
the war was the Hellenist
profanation of the Temple
in Jerusalem, linked with
the efforts to eradicate
Jewish religious practices.
Licentious pagan rites, in-
volving prostitution, - were
carried out within the sac:
red enclosures. The sacrifice
of pigs on the altar was in-
stitutionalized, with the
blood being sprinkled in the
Holy, of Holies.
Jerusalem's liberation
and the cleansing and re-
dedication of the Temple
was the primary goal of

the Jews in their war of
liberation. When the
Temple was reoccupied
after four years of war,
there was only enough oil
to light the menora for
one day and it lasted by a
miracle for eight -days,
until the supply could be
replenished. The war for
independence was to go
on kir 25 years before the
Seleucid Empire, largely
composed of Hellenized
Syrians, withdrew in de-
feat from Judea.

Israel Prices Skyrocket,
Ehrlich Career Threatened

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israelis were shocked over
the weekend to learn that
the consumer price index
soared by an unprecedented
6.2 percent during the
month of November.
The news sparked a new
chorus of demands for the
resignation of Finance
Minister Simha Ehrlich,
who is in serious trouble
with his Cabinet colleagues
over his IL 305 billion draft
budget for the fiscal year
1979-1980.
The consumer price index
rose 14 points last month to
stand at 238.6 based on 100
points in 1976. The steepest
rise was in the cost of food
which went up by 5.9 per-
cent in November. 'Vegeta-
bles skyrocketed by 19.6
percent and the price of to-
matoes increased 100 per-
cent in the course of a single
month. During the first 11
months of this year, the
cost-of-living index rose by
43.2 percent, • nearly a full
point higher than the total
increase in 1977.
Inflation was the sub-
ject of the Cabinet's reg-
ular weekly meeting
Sunday. Ehrlich told his
fellow ministers that the
price rise was but an-

other indication of the
urgent need to cut down
public spending. The
ministers agreed that the
inflationary spiral is
alarming but none of
them seemed ready to ac-
cept stringencies in their
own budgets and no deci-
sions were reached.
Since there seems to be an
impasse between Ehrlich
and the other ministers,
most observers believe
Premier Menahem Begin
will have to step in as an
arbitrator if the Cabinet is
to agree on a budget to sub-
mit to the Knesset next
year.
The Cabinet did agree on
two monetary measures
aimed at reducing the
amount of currency in circu-
lation and limiting foreign
currency loans. But Bank of
Israel sources said that
these moves alone could not
improve the economic situa-
tion. They urged the gov-
ernment to initiate a bold
new economic polic.y. and,
specifically, to reduce its
expenditures.

No Reason
for Enmity

fighting resistance of the
persecuted Judeans has
served as inspiration to both
Jews and Gentiles in each
generation since. Monu-
ments built in the Middle
Ages honoring Judah Mac-
cabee are found in Europe.
FrOm the days of the
Seleucid Hellenist-Syrian
oppression, martyrdom be-
came a hallmark of
Judaism, and soon after
(two to three centuries),
early Christians drew di-
rectly upon this Jewish
source when they as well as
Jews were persecuted by the
Romans.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Entertainer Sammy Davis
Jr., speaking at Cong. Bnai
Jeshurun Monday evening,
said he saw no reason for
enmity between blacks and
Jews.
"If any two people have a
right to be locked in to-
gether just in terms of what
has happened to them,
blacks and Jews should be
locked in," he said while
clasping his hands together.

NEW YORK (ZINS) —
According to recent statis-
tics, the Soviet Union is
allowing 2,000 Jews a
month to emigrate, but at
the same time indications of
anti-Semitism in official
'government circles is in-
creasing.
Soviet propaganda is the
basis for many of the emi-
- grants to seek to go to the
U.S. rather than to Israel
and conflicts have erupted
among the emigrants over
their ultimate destination.
