documented the first mic-
robiologic measurements of
significant anti-viral ac-
tivity in human blood
caused by a licensed drug.
The new drug, approved
last month by the Federal
Drug Administration was
developed by Parke-Davis
& Company, a subsidiary of
the Warner-Lambert Com-
pany, and will be produced
under the trade name,
Vira-A.
Dr. Lerner, Hutzel Hospi-
tal's chief of the Depart-
ment of Medicine, is also a
professor of medicine and
chief of the Division of In-
fectious Diseases at the
Wayne State University
School of Medicine. He is a
member of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
While the present appli-
cation of this research is
currently limited to the
treatment of herpes simplex
virus encephalitis, this mic-
robiologic- method is sig-
nificant milestone in anti-
viral research and holds
considerable promise for
wider applications in the fu-
ture.

organisms, do not respond
to treatment with antibiotic
compounds.-Viruses, in the
past, have been treated in a
symptomatic manner, re-
lieving outward discomfort
while allowing the human
body to combat the infection
internally.
With the development of
new anti-viral drugs by the
pharmaceutical industry,
there is hope that virus ail-
ments can be effectively
countered in a manner simi-
lar to anti-bacterial
therapy.

AJCongress, Forbes Action
Halts Petrodollar Parley

Following action by the
American Jewish Congress,
a "Michigan Congress on
Petromarket Realities" to
help businessmen ."deal
with" the Arab boyasitt, has
been canceled after it was
revealed that the state of
Michigan was falsely listed
as a sponsor.
The conference was origi-
nally scheduled for mid-
October at Wayne State
University, which had
agreed to co-sponsor the
event. It was advertised- in
the Wall Street Journal,
where it was seen by Ruth
Rosenbaum, director of the
Detroit office of the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress.
Mrs. Rosenbaum brought
it to the attention of State
Rep. Joseph Forbes, who
has worked cooperatively
with the American Jewish
Congress in developing
state anti-boycott legisla-
tion.
Rep. Forbes found that
the conference had not
been authorized by the
state legislature and that
its funding was never a
line item on the budget. A
funding item did appear
in the budget for a Middle
East economic develop-
ment conference which

(MereSCILIb)

was

to include Israel, but
not for a conference on
petrodollars, Rep.
Forbes said.
The co-chairmen of the
Michigan state legislature
subcommittee on appro-
priations — Sen. Bill S.
Huffman and Rep. Gary M.
Owen — immediately in-
formed the WSU coor-
dinators of the conference
that the legislature's name
was being used illegiti-
mately and without
adequate clearance. The
university then decided to
cancel the conference.
Mrs. Rosenbaum said
AJCongress was now inves-
tigating the coordinator of
the "Michigan Congress on
Petromarket Realities," an
organization known as
Mabco, Inc.
In its promotional
material for the confer-
ence, Mabco identified it-
self as a "producer of
highly successful inter-
national petromarket
conferences primarily re-
lated to the Arab world."
The Mabco brochure said
the petromarket conference
was "a cooperative venture
researched and planned by
one of the nation's largest
universities (Wayne State.)"
It listed these six bodies as
providing assistance: U.S.
Department of Commerce,
Chamber of Commerce of
Greater Detroit,
American-Arab Association
for Commerce and Industry,
U.S.-Arab Chamber of
Commerce, Mid-America-
Arab Chamber of Com-
merce and Royal Embassy
of Saudi Arabia.
Resource people for the
conference, Mabco said in
its promotional literautre,
had been "invited from a
wide spectrum of Arab and
American industry and de-
velopment."

Hillel Moses Men's Club
will sponsor another pro-
gram in its breakfast series
10 a.m. Sunday in the
synagogue. Irwin Shaw,
former executive vice
president of the Jewish,
Community , Center, will
speak on "The Detroit
Jewish Community: Its Be-
ginnings and Now." The
public is invited. Herman
Strassubrger is breakfast
forum chairman. Judge
Bernard Kaufman is men's
club president.
