Discussing her project,
Sister Carol said there
were many influences
which led her to pursue a
project on the Holocaust.
Amopg them were
Jewish friends of her
family and two books,
"Man's Search for Mean-
ing" by Victor Frankl
and "The Survivor" by
Terence. Des Pres. After
reading the Frankl
book, Sister Carol said
she "was horrified and
puzzled" and "as a Chris-
tian, I was most puzzled
by the silen6e of the
Church."
She has since done re-
search on the Holocaust in
Europe and coordinated a
lecture series on 'Violence
and the Violated"' at Mercy
for which she engaged the
services of author and con-
centration camp survivor
Elie Wiesel. In winter she
will teach a course on
"Agony and Triumph =- An
Encounter With the
Holocaust." She plans a
follow-up trip to Europe
next summer.
Dressed in modern garb,
rather than in the tradi-
tional nun's habit, Sister
Carol said that teaching the
class will be a challenge.
"It will be a challenge to
have the language to fit the
enormity of the event." She
said she planned to use
much literature to teach the
class and listed Wiesel,
Lucy Dswidowicz, Des Pres
and Frank' as some of the
authors whose works she
will include in the class sylr
-labus.
Sister Carol said that
her pursuit of knowledge
on the Holocaust was -
.part of a larger focus of
her project. She said she
was using the Holocaust
as a model to explore a
larger issue — social in-
justice. She said she
hoped to "develop a
model of theological re-
flection" with the project
"that will enable Chris-
tians to reflect on the
