tinian origin who was ar-

collaborating with a ter-
rorist organization.
Webster, a former federal
court judge, revealed the
FBI's role in the case during
a question period after he
addressed a session of the
national commission meet-
ing of the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith.
He said he had informed
the Israeli authorities that
Esmail underwent training
in Libya in terrorist tech-
niques and provided further
information about his in-
tended activities in Israel.
Webster said he found out
subsequently that the Is-
raelis had more information
on Esmail than the FBI-.
But, he said, he acted cor-
rectly and would do it again.
Esmail, a 24-year-old
Michigan State University
student, was paroled last
month after serving 10
months of a 15-month
prison term imposed for col-
laborating with the Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine (PFLP). He re-
turned immediately to the
U.S.
Webster discussed ter-
rorism in the course of his
speech to the ADL.

El Al to Serve
Chicago, Miami

French Prize

PARIS (JTA) — French
novelist Patrick Modiano
has been awarded France's
most prestigious literary
prize, the Prix Goncourt, for
his novel, "Rue des
Boutiques Obscures"
(Street of Darkened Shops):
Although the award is
only a 50 Franc ($10) check,
it usually assures a sale of
well over 100,000 copies of
the novel. The 33-year-old
writer, who was awarded
the French Academy Prize
in 1972, is of Jewish origin
and considers himself a
Jew.
All of his books have dealt
with the strange fauna —
black marketeers and
semi-collaborators — who
lived and sometimes pros-
pered in the shadow of,the
Nazi occupation.
Modiano, who has been
acclaimed, since his first
novel, "Place de 1'Etoile"
in 1968, as one of France's
foremost writers, has not
always been popular
with certain French Jews
as some of his Jewish
characters play a shady
role in their dealings with
the Germans and the
Vichy police.
Modiano is the author of
the book on which "thefilm,
"Lucien Lacombe," was
made and also wrote the
script. In this book he ex-
plains how an "innocent"
and half-dim youth joins the
pro-Nazi French police.

NEW YORK (JTA)— El
Al has decided to avail itself
of two of the four additional
destinations granted to it
based on the bilateral
agreement between the
United States and Israel, it
was announced by Y.
Shrem, senior vice
president for North and
Central America.

The first two destinations
to which service will com-
mence in the early part of
April 1979 will be twice-
weekly service to Chicago
and once-weekly service to
Miami via 747 jumbo jets.
