Ramallah Protests Demolition of Alleged Terrorist Homes.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Residents-of the West Bank
town of Ramallah staged a
three-hour shut-down
strike of all schools and
shops on Wednesday in pro-
test over the demolition of
two houses-in the neighbor-
ing village of Silwad by the
military government ear-
lier in the week.

The merchants' strike
ended after a few hours, but
pupils continued their
demonstration despite
police action taken to dis-
perse them.
The incident which pro-
voked the protests — and a
sharp Egyptian criticism of
the Israeli demolition ac-
tion — occurred on Monday

headed a political assas-
sination unit in Ramal-
lah, which killed a well-
known businessman and
a government official
earlier this year, and
which planned addi-
tional attacks on West
Bank Arabs cooprating
with the authorities.
The demolitions were de-
scribed by military
authorities as a deterrent
measure, and not a
reinstatement of the prev-
ious punitive policy which
prevailed in the adminis-
tered territories a decade
ago. Town and village lead-
ers in the area said, how-
ever, that the IDF is plan-
ning further house demoli-
tions, and that it is already
surveying houses in ad-
'vance of their demolition.
West Bank mayors and
council leaders sent tele-
grams to American
President Jimmy Carter to
that effect on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, lawyer
Felicia Langer, who repre-
sents the two owners of the
demolished houses, filed a
claim on Tuesday with the
West Bank military com-
mander, demanding com-
pensation for the houses.
