SF Elects First Jewish, Woman Mayor
SAN FRANCISCO (JTA)
— Dianne Feinstein was
elected Monday by the
board of supervisors as the
38th mayor of San Fran-
cisco and the first Jewish
woman to serve in that post.
Mr& Feinstein,' the 45-
year-old president of the
board of supervisors who
has served as acting mayor
since Mayor George R. Mos-
cone was shot to death in his
city hall office, will be
mayor until the end of 1979.
A member of the board of
supervisors since 1969, Mrs.
Feinstein twice lost bids for

Catholic. Although she
graduated from the Con-
vent of Sacred Heart, she

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The physical condition of
former Israel Prime Minis-
ter Golda Meir has taken a
turn for the worse, and
physicians at Jerusalem's
Hadassah Hospital, where
Mrs. Meir has been hos-
pitalized on and off for the
- past four- months, are pre -
sently checking for the on-,
gin of a case of' jaundice
which set in on Monday.
"Mrs. Meir's jaundice
could be due to a case of
viral hepatitis or it could be
a result of kidney prob-
lems," said a hospital
spokesman on Tuesday.
"We are presently at-
tempting to determine
which. I don't know if I'd -say
- her condition has worsened.
Rather, a change, in it has
occurred."
A spokesman. said that
Mrs. Meir had developed a
liver infection and was suf-
fering from severe stomach
pains, in' addition to the
jaundice. Physicians at the
hospital are still conducting
examinations to determine
the source of the jaundice.
He added, as in earlier
statements about the
former premier's condition,
that Mrs. Meir spends her
time reading the newspap-
ers, watching television and
visiting with members of
her family.
