Status of French Jewry Outlined at JDC Meeting
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Baron Guy de Rothschild,
who has been president of
the Fonds Social Juif Unifie
(FSJU), the French Jewish
communal and social wel-
fare agency, for 25 years,
outlined the development of
the French Jewish commu-
nity since World War II to
the 64th annual meeting of
the Joint Distribution
Committee in New York.
He was presented the JDC's
Ma'asim Tovim (good deeds)
Award "for his leadership in
But, Rothschild added,
"I have to stress that al-
though we are deeply
concerned with the prob-
lems of the so-called 'sec-
ond Israel,' we watch, sit-
ting at our own doorway
thousands of young
people of exceptional vit-
ality, but whose future as
Jews is greatly in danger
presently.

helping revive the French
Jewish community after the
devastation of the war."
Praising the JDC for its
assistance in that revival,
Rothschild said that by
shunning long-range plan-
ning the French Jewish
community has "been
`managing' from one year to
the next the 'unpredictable,'
an 'unpredictable' which
brought our community
from the 100,000 we were
left in 1945 to some 700,000
we count now."
Rothschild said French
Jews want to be associated
with other Jews throughout
the world in "Project Re-
newal" the program to re-
habilitate poor Jewish
neighborhoods in Israel.

BARON DE ROTHSCHILD
volved in regular youth
educational programs. The
problem is serious, there is
not just a lack of financial
means, but also a lack of
doctrine, of trained profes-
sionals and adequate prem-
ises."
Rothschild said the effort
to prevent French youth
from being lost to Judaism
is of prime importance and
takes precedence over "our
important relief programs,
although they are still
needed and dangerously in-
adequate" as well as the
medical, aid to the aged and
other programs.
He said French Jewry
cannot meet this need
alone. He noted that an
agreement with the Jewish
Agency will enable the
FSJU to enlarge existing
Jewish schools and build
new ones in such cities as
Paris, Toulouse and Marse-
illes, but he noted that last
y6ar the summer camp pro-
gram had to be cut for finan-
cial reasons.
He said with the con-
tinued support of the
JDC, French Jewry - will
build "a new type of
French Jewish society of
Sephardim and
Ashkenazim, which has
its specific and meaning-
ful place between the
American Jewish com-
munity and Israel."

budget for 1979 was adopted
by the JDC at its annual

Pittsburgh was re-elected
president for a second one-
year term. Also re-elected at
the meeting were Jack D.
Weiler, chairman of the
board of directors; and
Ralph I. Goldman, execu-
tive vice president.

AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
The Anne Frank exhibition
shown in Japan for 60 days
was visited by more than
350,000 persons.
The exhibition was or-
ganized jointly by the Anne
Frank Foundation in
Amsterdam and a Tokyo
newspaper.
Anne Frank is extremely
popular in Japan. An-
nually, at least 10,000
copies of the Japanese
translation of her diary are
sold and Japanese tourists
in Amsterdam usually in-
clude a visit to the Anne
Frank House.
