Israel Hits Egyptian Backing of UN Arms Embargo Draft

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
An Israeli government
source expresSed shock and
disappointment Wednesday
over Egyptian support of
the Iraqi-sponsored draft
resolution adopted Tuesday
at the United Nations Gen-
eral Assembly's Political

Committee which called for
a mandatory arms embargo
against Israel.
The source said that
Egypt's hypocritical be-
havior and ability to iden-
tify with declarations whose
intentions are to destroy Is-
rael were beyond logic. -
He added that the draft
was diametrically opposed
to the Camp David accords
and to Article VI of the
peace treaty which estab-
lishes that the Israeli-
Egyptian treaty takes pre-
cedence over any past
treaties of agreements that
either country may have
entered into with respect to
the Middle East conflict.
The General Assembly
vote on the embargo
question was 68-24 with

among those who op-
posed the draft, which
asks the Security Council
to impose the embargo.
Diplomats believe the Se-
curity Council is unlikely to
adopt the embargo because
of the threat of a U.S. veto.
Meanwhile, Yehuda
Blum, Israel's Ambassador
to the UN, charged'that the
issue of apartheid is being
used to single out Israel for
condemnation over allega-
tions of military and com-
mercial involvements with
South Africa that have been
shown by Israel, time and
again, to be groundless.

UNESCO Vote
Blames Israel

PARIS (JTA) — The
United Nations Educa-
tional, Scientific and Cul-
tural Organization (UN-
ESCO) conference Monday
adopted an Arab-sponsored
resolution condemning Is-
rael for allegedly depriving
Palestinian Arabs in the Is-
rael administered ter-
ritories of their rights to'
culture and education.
After the vote was taken
confirming a resolution
adopted in commission ear-
lier this month, the Israeli
delegate, _ Ambassador
Amiel Najar, told the con-
ference: "This has nothing
to do with culture or educa-
tion. It is part of the Arab
political war against Is-
rael."
• The conference, which
voted 55-6 with 27 abstain-
ing, also re-introduced the
earlier 1974 and 1976 reso-
lutions blaming Israel. It
also called on the organiza-
tion's director general,
Amadou Mukhtar M'Bow,
to send a UNESCO mission
to investigate Israeli-
sponsored educational and
cultural facilities in the'
West Bank, Gaza and
"occupied Jerusalem."
The Israeli delegation
had earlier said that Israel
will not allow another UN-
ESCO mission to investi-
gate inside Israel and Is-
raeli administered ter-
ritories. The Israeli stand
was upheld by the Canadian
delegate, Yvon Beaulne,
who said "the resolution is
so harsh as to make it virtu-
ally impossible for Israel to
carry out."
