Twelve Mile Road Berkley, Mich. A Pharmaceutical Pilgrimage Marks $1,231,000 Bond Fete for Jack Robinson A veritable pilgrimage of representatives of all ph- ases of the drug industry marked the Israel Bond dinner given in honor of Jack Robinson, president and founder of Perry Drugs, held Monday evening at Fairlane Manor. There were nearly 1,000 at the event and the phar- maceutical industry, country-wide, converged on this area to pay honor to one of the most successful heads of a drug chain in this coun- try. David Hermelin, chair- man of the Greater Detroit Israel Bond organization, in one of the tributes ex- pressed by participants on the program, announced a record sale of $1,231,000 in Israel Bonds in recognition of Robinson's many services to important causes in the community. Samuel Frankel spoke as a life-long friend of the honoree, describing the -struggles of a man who, orphaned at the age of two, rose to affluence and eminence in pursuit of a career in his chosen field, while, as a youth, had helped to support a fatherless family. The Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award was presented to Robinson by Ben-Zion Bezalel, director of State of Israel Develop- ment Authority for the Midwest. As guest speaker, Dr. Leon Keyserling, eminent economist and former ad- viser to the President and a member of the White House staff of economic experts during the Truman Ad- ministration, pointed to the danger of Israel abandoning territory vital to her de- fense. He drew upon early American experience in the acquisition of California and refusal to return the territory to Mexico because the defensive position for the U.S. was vital. Keyserling emphasized the importance of support- ing the Israel Bond program and expressed confidence that the Jewish state's eco- nomic position will improve despite the high inflation rate. Robinson's acknowl- edgement of the award and the accolades was an eloquent address in which he re-affirmed his deep interest in Israel and in the human causes which dis- tinguished the name of Eleanor Roosevelt, the name affixed on the award he received. He paid respect to his family and apprecia- tion to the vast audience that had made the invest- ment in Israel Bonds possi- ble. Rabbi Irwin Groner gave the invocation and Cantor Jacob Barkin led in the singing of the national an- thems. A number of addi- tional awards were given by the Israel Bond organiza- tion to a group of active workers in the Robinson tribute dinner, with special acclaim for Fox and Robert Shapiro.
