Friday, November 11, 1918 63 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Derivation , of 'Messiah' I By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.) The term "Messiah" in Jewish tradition as it was originally used iri the Old testament, was an adjec- o tive which referred to both special humans and special objects to signify that they were "anointed." This indicated that these peop' nd objects were con- ,tecr, to the Almighty and were to be viewed and treated as such. With the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem the role of anointing was abandoned. Therefore, thereafter the act of anointing or having either people or objects anointed, would signal that the temple had been re- stored and Israel re- instated to its ancient glory and holiness. It was thus that this ,term came later to be as- signed to the human fig- ure who would come forth as the deliverer of the people since he would herald the reinstatement of the original consecra- tion unto the Almighty. To be able to carry forth this official mission he him- self would have to be an anointed one to indicate that he himself was an offi- cial of the Almighty or an "anointed" one. - Research Fund REHOVOT, Israel — A new research fund has been established by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and the Yeda Re- search and Development Co. to finance industrially- oriented studies at the Weizmann Institute of Sci- ence.
