Some Hebrew months are
of 29 days duration while
others are of 30 days dura-
tion.
A Hebrew month begins
with the initial appearance
of the new moon. The tech-
nical length of such a month
is about 29 1/% days. Obvi-
ously, if we were precise, the
Hebrew month would there-
fore be beginning in the
middle of the day, so that
part of the day would belong
to the new month. This \is
impractical.

who you used to know at Irving's Furniture. I'm in California now,
but I'm still in the same business and still thinking of
my old friends back in Michigan.
It would be great having customers like you again! So . . . if you
like the wa,y I took care of your furniture needs in the
old days ... and you happen to be in Southern California ...
come in and let me show you my new store ...

Therefore,
ordained that some of the
months would be of 30 days
duration and some of the
months would be of 29 , days
duration. Generally speak-
ing, an attempt was made to
make all those months that
contain Jewish holidays to
be of 30 days duration,
while the others were of 29
days duration, all this with
certain exceptions.
Thus, the month of Tis-
hri during which Rosh
Hashana falls, the
month of Kislev during
which Hanuka falls, the
month of Shevat during
which Tu b'Shevat falls,
the month of Nisan dur-
ing which Passover falls,
the month of Sivan dur-
ing which Shavuot falls
and the month of Av dur-
ing which Tisha b'Av
falls, are generally
months of 30 days dura-
tion. In order to balance
the fractions, Heshvan is
sometimes a full month
and Kislev is sometimes a
29-day month.
The beginning of the new
month is announced in the
synagogue at the public
service on the Sabbath be-
fore the new month begins.
This is a replica of the
tradition in the days of
the Temple in Jerusalem
when the new month was
publicly announced on
the day of its arrival by
the rabbinical court. The
reason fOr this was so
that people understand
that humans have a re-
sponsibility to account
for the passage of time,
i.e., to make it as produc-
tive as possible.
Second, announcing the
beginning of the month to
come in public on Sabbath is
a means of alerting the pub-
lic to start to prepare for the
specific holiday that is
scheduled to appear during
that month, i.e., to review
the laws that appertain to
that holiday and to prepare
the detailed items neces-
sary for the observance of
that holiday.

In the Jordan Valley,
Galilee and the Carmel
Range, bones of Early Man
• were found with tools and
remains of animals. The
oldest of these remains date
back over a million years.
