DEDICATION TO EXCELLENCE

analyzer developed by Dr.
Henryk Fischler of the
Weizmann Institute's De-
partment of Biological Ul-
trastructure and by Dr.
Salomon Behar in collab-
oration with Prof. Henry N.
Neufeld of Tel Aviv Uni-
veristy's Medical School
and the Chaim Sheba Medi-
cal Center.
The table-radio-sized
logic system which auto-
matically scans electrocar-
diograms for pacemaker
performances — glowing
green if all is in order, red if
anything is wrong — has al-
ready been tested suc-
cessfully on hundreds of
patients both during the
critical post-operative
period and during the man-
datory checkups sub-
sequent to discharge. Clini-
cal evaluations at the Sheba
Medical Center are continu-
ing.
According to Dr. Fischler,
the new analyzer alerts doc-
tors to impending battery
exhaustion, the possible
failure of the generator's
electronic circuitry and"in-
correct positioning or mal-
functioning of the elec-
trodes that deliver the pac-
ing stimuli to the heart and
that, in demand pacemak-
ers, sense cardiac potentials
and activate the
pacemaker. Thus, it differs
from most other pacemaker
testers that can only detect
battery weakness and are
difficult to use the demand
pacemakers.
the
addition,
In
simplicity and defini-
tiveness of the instru-
ment makes it a valuable
tool also for general prac-
titioners who can now
offer immediate reassur-
ance to patients who are
worried lest their
pacemakers are not
operating properly.
Moreover, the Israeli de-
vice can be easily oper-
ated by nurses and other
paramedical personnel.

To some extent, the new
device is even superior to
electro-cardiogram inspec-
tion. Because it is so simply
designed, patients can be
monitored by a nurse for
periods longer than those
customary when car-
diologists are called in to
interpret results, a more
protracted the 'kup
facilitating the spotting of
defects that initially show
up only intermittently.
Additionally, the new in-
strument encourages more
frequent testing of patients,
a fact known to increase
survival rates and decrease
the necessity for emergency
pacemaker replacement.
More recently, the
pacemaker function
analyzer has been adapted
round-the-clock
for
function
pacemaker
analysis within cardiac in-
tensive care wards and has
been tested at the Coronary
Care Center at the Sheba
Medical Center.
Many doctors are now
taking advantage of tech-
niques that permit sending
electrocardiogram tracings
by telephone, either when
long-distance consulting is
involved or in order to
evaluate the condition of
patients in remote areas.
Dr. Fischler's PFA provides
the possibility of con-
veniently checking pacing
via the telephone, as well.
While still in its de-
velopmental stage, this
further refinement of the
PFA aims at freeing the
patient from the neces-
sity of visiting a heart in-
stitute to assess
pacemaker performance.
Eventually it is hoped' to
have the whole operation

run by a cot iputerized
automatic answering
service.
If the results of the long-
distance test are satisfac-
tory, the recording will so
inform the patient. If not,
his call will automatically
be transferred to the on-
duty cardiologist who will
give detailed instructions.
Because the PFA can only
measure pacemaker func-
tion, it is essential that the
patient who will take ad-
vantage of this service is
under the care of a local
physician who regularly
checks his complete health
picture.

TIGER

OF SWEDEN

A departure from the
conventional close-fitting
silhouette

The most elegant
expression of the
contemporary "soft look"
as interpreted by Gil
Truedson. A revolutionary
collection featuring lapels
which are narrower, lower
pockets, smaller buttons,
lighter fabrics, softer
linings, and trousers which
are tapered and
semitapered. It's all new,
easy-fitting, and definitely
the look of '79.
