• .Dr. Leon Stitskin, Jewish Scholar, Dies NEW YORK — Dr. Leon D. Stitskin, director of community relations and special publications at Yeshiva University and professor of Jewish philos- ophy at- the university's Bernard Revel Graduate School until his retirement this fall after 25 years of service to the university, died Nov. 3 at age_67. Burial will take place in Israel. Dr. Stitskin was author of "Judaism As A Philosophy," published by the Bernard Revel Graduate School. He w so the author of rrsnAs A Religion" and `Vepqh Philosophy: A Study In Personalism." He served as editor of the "Sermon Manual" of the Rabbinical Council of America and as editor of "Anthology of Studies in Torah Judaism" published by Yeshiva University in honor of the late Dr. Samuel Belkin's 25th anniversary as president of the univer- sity. He was a contributor to the "National Jewish Monthly," "Spectator," and other periodicals and was editor of the university's "Studies in Torah Judaism," "Studies in Judaica" and co-editor of "Tradition." His column, - t t' "From the Pages of Tradi- tion" appeared regularly in "Tradition." Dr. Stitskin's most recent effort was to annotate and edit "Letters of Maimonides." Dr. Stitskin was or- dained at Rabbi Isaac El- chanan Theological Sem- inary, a Yeshiva Univer- sity affiliate, in 1933 and_ earned the Doctor of He- brew Literature degree from the university's Bernard Revel Graduate School in 1956. He also studied at Hebrew Uni- versity of Jerusalem and Dropsie University in Philadelphia. From 1934 to 1942, Dr. Stitskin served as rabbi of Cong. Beth Israel in War- ren, Ohio. In 1943, he be- came spiritual leader of the Beth Joseph Center, Rochester, N.Y. He was rabbi of the Jewish Com- munity Center of Philadel- phia from 1951 to 1953, from which he joined the staff of Yeshiva University. In 1950, Dr. Stitskin went to Israel on behalf of the American Zionist Council and the Congressional Committee of the Zionist Council of Upstate New York. Upon his return, his "Report On Israel" was read into the Congressional Re- cord of the 81st Congress on Israel's Independence Day by U.S. Sen. Kenneth B. Keating and the council also published his "Report On Religion In Israel." In 1962, Dr. Stitskin went to Los Angeles to es- tablish a branch of Yeshiva University on the West Coast. For two years, he headed West Coast Teacher's College, the forerunner of today's Yeshiva University of Los Angeles. Dr. Stitskin was active in the affairs of the Zionist Organization of America; Mizrachi, the American Jewish Congress and Bnai Brith. He was a' member of the New York State Board of Equality in Edwcation as well as American Academy for Jewish Research and American Philosophical Society. • Barney Golden Morris Stern, owner of Gem Jewelry Co. located on Michigan Avenue in Inks- ter for the past 32 years, died,Nov. 2 at age 61.
