There was also a sharp

rity Committee which was
briefed Monday night by
Acting Premier Yigael
Yadin. Following the meet-
ing, members of the com-
mittee decided to send mes-
sages to Begin and to the
negotiating team in Wash-
ington disapproving the
loan idea. It was Begin him-
self who announced in New
York last week that Israel
would seek a 25-year low-
interest loan instead of an
outright grant. However, he
cabled the Cabinet Tuesday
that he has not withdrawn
Israel's request for a grant.
Meanwhile, Yadin said
on Israel Radio that
"there still remain some
basic, very important dif-
ferences in concluding
the peace negotiations
between Israel and Egypt
and these are not only
differences on small is-
sues." He emphasized
that there was no need to
rush into the conclusion
of a treaty. "This- is a
basic treaty which will
determine our s e curity
and way of life for many
years to come and we
must take each issue and

considerations of what is
best for us."
Yadin, who met with U.S.
Ambassador Samuel Lewis
Tuesday morning at the
envoy's request, said, "We
spoke generally about the
peace negotiations. I ex-
plained to him both the
stands 'of the government
and of certain ministers and
we spoke about the prob-
lems now facing us. We also
tried to examine potential
alternative solutions."
Yadin said he and Lewis
did not discuss American fi-
nancial assistance for Is-
rael's withdrawal from
Sinai but that he' did ex-
plain the position of the
Knesset's Foreign Affairs
and Security Committee on
the issue of a loan versus a
grant.
Meanwhile, in Canada,
Begin told an official recep-
tion given by Prime Minis-
ter Pierre Elliott Trudeau
that "the state of war being
terminated, peace will be
established soon but we
must be a little patient."
Begin also told the
3,000 guests • that Israel
"does deserve peace."
Speaking to Trudeau,
who was next to him,
Begin said, "I invite you,
Mr. Prime Minister, to be
the guest of myself and
my wife in Israel. After so
many wars, imprison-
ments and concentration
camps, today is a good
day for us."
Trudeau said, "After the
tremendous ovations which
greeted your presence in the
House of Commons today, I
thought that an alliance
may be struck between the
Liberal Party of Canada
(Trudeau's party) and the
Likud." In a more serious
vein, Trudeau said,, "You
are the leader of a valiant
and industrious people and
you came here at the mo-
ment of a turning point in
the history of Israel. By
your pfesence and the tim-
ing of your visit, you have
honored us, the people and
the government of Canada."
Earlier, Begin addressed
500 leaders from 50 Jewish
communities throughout
Canada and told them, "I
got a sweet reception at the
House of Commons today.
Never did I dream to have
one like that in the Knes-
set." Begin said, "Jerusalem
remains united and indivis-
ible as long as Israel exists."
He described the coopera-
tion between Egypt and Is-
rael on the Suez Canal, oil
explorations in the Sinai,
and added that Israeli forces
will stay on the West Bank
and defend "the security of
our children." Begin said he
was looking for an impor-
tant loan from the U.S. "for
the resettlement of the
Yamit residents and for the
building of new airports.
The United States Con-
gress, I hope, will consider

our request in dignity."
He also appealed to the
Jewish community lead-
ers to help in the solving
of the rehousing of 50,000
under-privileged Is-
raelis. He said, "In a few
years I will be out of poli-
tics. I am an old man now
and I have served my
people and my country
for 50 years. There is
room for the new genera-
tion. Israel expects
everyone to do his or her
duty. Then we shall live
happily together."
Begin told newsmen after
the reception, "I did not ask
for any financial help from
the government of Canada,
but we asked for a balance
in our trade exchanges
which is completely
natural." Sources said the
balance was running heav-
ily in favor of Canada.
Begin also told newsmen
that he mentioned to
Trudeau a possible request
by Israel for an increase in
the number of men in the
Canadian contingent in the
United Nations peacekeep-
ing forces in the Sinai after
a peace agreement is
signed.
Last week, in New York,
Begin met with President
Jimmy Carter briefly, fol-
loiving reports that the
President was snubbing_
Begin. Both said there were
few differences between the
U.S. and Israel.

hecklers, who were escorted
