You'll hardly wish to in- vite them as house guests, but it is an experience not easily Ffroorm g o B t t r e anz it r o sreee l ` ea "The " e he d Boys by 20th Century Fox. For yourdining pleasure! BERKLEY THEATRE Little Caesars I Pizzeria I - South America is notabl e for its spacious, splendorou scenery. It is also the pur ported hideaway for "Th e Boys From Brazil" — ex Nazis with assumed names and fraudulent passports — who hide their identities and get lost in the vast sur- rounding areas . . Young Barry Kohler, a visiting American (Steven Guttenberg), sensing some- thing uncanny is afoot, photographs a group of former Nazis at clandestine meeting places. He sends the photos to an elderly man, Ezra Lieberman (Laurence Olivier), a sur- vivor of Hitler's death camps — whose mission of conscience is to track down the vast number of Nazi officers who are still alive. Noted writer Ira Levin, on whose book "The Boys From Brazil" is based — says he never met Simon Wiesenthal before he wrote the novel. "I knew that Dr. Josef Mengele was alive — somewhere down in the jungle . . . and I had read numerous accounts about Wiesenthal. But it - wasn't until after the book was printed that I met and had lunch with Wiesenthal. Surprisingly, he was even wearing a black raincoat like Lieberman in my book. It was really a strange feel- ing. I'd sent him the book and he liked it very much. He felt it was a big help — particularly in regard to younger readers." (Random Frouse which brought out a hard- cover, first printing of 50,000; and Dell, which paid $800,000 for the rights to the paperback say the book is "a phenomenal best seller"). The success of the movie depends solely on the movie-going public — who, for the most part, have been so confused by the theories of "cloning" — (as blown out of all proportion by the cri- tics) — that they hardly have been given the oppor- tunity to assess the implica- tions of Nazis still at large -- and the importance of tracking them down and bringing them to justice. It is also a sad commen- tary to note the vagaries upon which movie review- ers base their likes and dis- likes . . . One TV critic said he "didn't like all the cloning-around" (a poor at- tempt at a joke) — 'while a radio reviewer decried "all the gratuitous violence" — and urged parents not to take their children to see "The Boys From Brazil." Nobody attempted to rationalize that the very man (Dr. Mengele) who was the object of violence — by the attack dogs whose mas- ter he had just murdered — was, in fact, the doctor who cold-bloodedly tortured, maimed and murdered 300,000 innocent Jews at Auschwitz. Did this same critic decry the "gratuitous violence" of Holocaust vic- tims? "HEAVEN CAN WAIT" (PG) OFFER GOOD 5 to 9 o.m. THRU NOV. 9 ' (Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.) Weekdays incl. Sat.
