26 Friday, November 3, 1918 • THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS American Government Intelligence Agencies Now Admit That They Utilized Nazi War Criminals After World War II By ROCHELLE SAIDEL WOLK (Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.) After 30 years of silence and denials, the U.S. gov- ernment has finally owned up to the fact that American intelligence agencies have utilized alleged Nazi war criminals. This admission, however, barely scratches - the surface of the intelli- gence agencies' involve-- ment and the government's concealment efforts, accord- ing to author Charles R. Al- len, Jr., noted expert on Nazi war criminals in - America. In January 1977, Rep. Joshua Eilberg (D-Pa.), chairman of the House of Representatives Subcom- mittee on Immigration, re- quested the comptroller general "to conduct a strionNotoot ovockaqr,41-lernive thorough investigation of this situation and specifi- cally asked him to deter- mine whether there was any evidence of deliberate attempts on the part of U.S. government agencies to obstruct or quash investiga- tions and 'prosecutions of these individuals." In compliance with this request, on May 15, 1978, the General Accounting Office (GAO), the investiga- tive arm of Congress, issued a report entitled "Wide- spread Conspiracy to Obstruct Probes of Alleged Nazi War Criminals Not Supported by Available Evidence — Controversy taken aback because the Greene, former Deputy May Continue." figures exceeded the admis- Commissioner of the INS, Although the report sions by the CIA and the who claimed he "knew stated that there was no State Department by quite from nothing," according evidence of a "wide- a bit.
