Ex-Detroit Labor Zionist Leader
Writes About Development Towns

Laible Hoffmitz will be
remembered as the Labor
Zionist activist who served
as director of the Labor
Zionist Alliance office in
Detroit before settling in Is-
rael in 1962.
He had written exten-
sively on Israeli develop-
ments and he shared his ex-
periences with readers in
numerous magazines in
both Israel and the United
States.
His major literary
achievement is a volume
that should serve in attain-
ing knowledge about the
- development of many newly
developed communities in
Israel.
"The Other Side of Is-
rael: The Story of De-
velopment Towns," pub-
lished by Nateev in
Jerusalem is a recent
-
compilation.
This work is so extensive
that it serves as a supple-
ment to geographical Israeli
analyses and to an under-
standing of how the pioneer-
ing spirit predominates in
Israel.
A list of the settlements
described by the former De-
troiter gives emphasis • to
the courage that is so vital
in the creative efforts which
have made Israel a superb
example of creative labor.
The developing towns de-
scribed in his book include:
Kiryat Shmona, Hatzor
Haglilit, Beth Shean, Nat-
vat Mit, Migdal Haemek,
Maalot, Shloni, Carmiel,
Yokneam, Or Akiva, Beth
Shemesh, Rosh Haayin, Or
Yehuda, Yavne, Ashdod,
Ashkelon, Kiryat Malachi,
Kiryat Gat, Sderot, Netivot,
Ifakin, Beersheba, Arad,
Dimona, Yeruham, Mitzpe
Ramon and Eilat.
So many of these have
already become so well
known that the descrip-
tive taskS pursued by
Hoffmitz become valu-
able historically.
An explanation- of his
work appears in his intro-
duction. He writes:
"The phenomenon 'De-
velopment Town' is the
greatest creation, the most
fascinating story of the re-
birth of the land of Israel. It
is not just another story of
brick and mortar, of build-
ings and pavements on
hills, in valleys and in the
hot, sandy desert.
"The story of the de-
velopment town is an epic
poem of the `ingathering of
the Exiles,' of the homecom-
ing of hundreds of
thousands of the remnants
of an ancient people who, for

His stories are revealing
and they add fascination for
those seeking an under-

the pioneers.

centuries, have been scat-
tered all over God's earth. It
is also the story of `Mizug
Galuyot,' of the fusion of the
Diasporas, of moulding
them into one people in a
modern, . vibrant and free
society. The development
town is the greatest human
and,social laboratory in the
world.
"Those who have seen
the budding of these
'towns' in 1949, 1950 —
`111a'abarot' (transient
camps) as they were
called — with thousands
of tents, large and small,
rows of ramshackle huts
sprawled over fields and
crowded with human be-
ings, men, women and
children, the old and the
sick, living under appal-
ing physical conditions,
have been eye witnesses
to a modern genesis:
Somebody said: 'let there
be a town,' and there was
evening, and there was
morning, and there was a
town. And the town was
called ... And there was
evening, and there was
morning, and there was
another town. So there
were evenings, and there
were mornings, and
about 30 towns sprang up
throughout the land,
even in places 'where
angels dared not tread.' "
From Upper Galilee down
to the Gulf of Aqaba — from
Kiryat Shmona to Eilat, the
land is studded with these
development towns, `Ayarot
Pituach', or, what we have
come to call in the vernacu-
lar of modern Israel:
`Eretz Israel Hashniya' —
the 'Other Israel'."
Hoffmitz does, indeed, de
scribe the joys and the sor-
rows that accompanied the
establishment of the 27
towns under review. He had
