PHILADELPHIA — A
book dealing with the
struggle of the Hebrew lan-
guage and culture for survi-
val and creative expression
in the Soviet Union, pub-
lished last year in Israel in
Hebrew, will be published
in this country in English
early next year.
Dr. Yeshoshua A. Gilboa,
a visiting professor at Drop-
sie University on leave from
Tel Aviv University, is
completing the English
translation.
The book, titled "Lashon
Omedet Al. Lafsha" (Fight
for Survival), is Dr. Gilboa's
most recent work dealing
with the Jewish problem in
the Soviet Union. It was
widely hailed by critics and
scholars.
The English edition
will be titled "The Mar-
tyred Language — He-
brew Culture in the
Soviet Union."
Dr. Gilboa shows how
Hebrew literature, dating
back to the turn of the cen-
tury, lived an "illegal" life
in Russia, and that many of
the Hebrew writers spent
"I really wish the Jews
again in Judea an indepen-
dent nation . . . (which) may
be admitted to all the
privileges of citizens in
every part of the world."
— John Adams (1819)
