Newspaper Re-Affirms Malawi Support for Israel

(Editor's Note: The fol-
lowing editorial is re-
printed from the Malawi
Daily Times, a major
Black African paper.)
Malawi's friendly tie with
Israel is not a situation that
she is afraid to register to
the world, despite the fact
that the majority of other
independent African states
broke relations with the
Jewish state during and
after the 1973 Yom Kippur
War in the Middle East.
Whatever the reasons
that prompted the African
states to sever their rela-
tions with Israel, this did
not concern Malawi at all
because she had no cause to
jump on the bandwagon.
Malawi holds the fact
that Israel has a right to
exist in peace with her Arab
neighbors as a recognized
entity, just as much as the
Arabs themselves. Both the
Israelis and the Arabs be-
long to the Middle East, and
it is only right and proper
that both of them should
live together in peace and
harmony, respecting one
another's territorial integ-
rity and sovereignty.
Malawi cherishes the
relations that exist be-
tween the two countries
because, despite the con-
stant threat of war and
relatively limited re-
sources, Israel has main-
tained a high standard of
technical assistance to
Malawi in the fields of
medicine, agriculture
and training of young
people for leadership.
Although Israel has no oil
to offer Malawi like her
Arab neighbors, this
country refused to trade for
benefits of oil during the
1973 Middle East conflict
when its long standing
friend was bleeding.
Malawi preferred to suffer
the consequences of the oil
weapon than to sell her con-
science and principles.

As the minister for the
Central Region, Aaron
Gadama, pointed out at a
farewell reception for out-
going Israeli Ambassador
Laor, Malawian nurses and
eye specialists have re-
ceived very useful training
in Israel. At the same time,
specialized personnel in
these fields continue to be
• made available to Malawi.
This practical assistance by
Israel is greatly appreciated
by Malawi.
We very much under-
stand when Mr. Laor
pointed out at the reception
that although Israel had lit-
tle to offer in the fields of oil
or in material wealth, she

likes to share with others
and help them in the com-
mon struggle for a better fu-
ture.
Mr. Laor went on to
praise our life president's
leadership, saying the
Ngwazi will go down in
history not only as a
saviour of his people and
the country, but also as
one who saved the honor
of Africa when she
lacked mostly in true
leadership and courage.
Indeed, when the rest of
Africa decided to break
their friendship with Israel,
the Ngwazi stood steadfast
and vowed to be on the side
of Israel.

Today, those African
states who severed relations
with Israel are re-thinking
again their attitude, be-
cause they realize that they
were simply misled and de-
ceived. The rich Arab states
had promised those African
states who broke ties with
Israel that they would re-
ceive massive financial aid
to combat the escalating
prices of oil, to stabilize
their economies. Yet the
Arabs have given little or no
assistance at all as prom-
ised, leaving the African
states in chaotic economic
situations.
The African states which
broke relations with Israel

L .....

now realize that their so-
called Arab friends did not
mean what they said. All
the Arabs wanted from
them was support at the
United Nations to trade for
punitive measures against
Israel, by giving them false
promises.
