Conference sponsors in- cluded the National Confer- ence of Christians and Jews, the United States Catholic Bishops Conference, the National Institute on the Holocaust and the Philadelphia Coordinating Council on the Holocaust. David Gross, Jewish Exponent staff writer, reported that the major focus of the conference was discussion of the breakdown in ethics among professional and vocational groups during the Holocaust period. Dr. Franklin Littell was con- ference coordinator and chairman of the religion department at Temple University. Benjamin Halevi, deputy speaker of the Knesset and an Israeli Supreme Court Justice at the time of the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the other keynote speaker, de- clared: "Never again will we stand alone as the Jews of Nazi Europe did. We must have friends and allies and we must teach the true les- sons of the Holocaust so the young can understand what might happen if they re- main passive." Other conference sessions dealt with right and wrong methods of teaching the Holocaust, the commitment of the West German gov- ernment to teaching the Holocaust and eye-witness reports from several of those who opened various death camps. Joseph Borkin, author of the recently pub- lished, "The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Far- ben," was also a featured speaker. A major art exhibit, "The Living Witness: Art in the Concentration Camp," opened at the Museum of American Jewish history in con- junction with the confer- ence. The exhibit, coor- dinated by local artist Mary Costanza, features art work by camp in- mates and will run through December. Prior to the Holocaust conference, 85 theologians from Germany and North America participated in a two-day symposium. At its conclusion, they issued a statement calling on their fellow Christians to observe the 40th anniversary of Kristallnacht ("the night of broken glass") on Nov. 9-10, 1938 when there was a widescale public attack on the Jews of Germany. Israel Faces Tough Time at UNESCO PARIS (JTA) — The Arab countries belonging to the "Rejection Front" and the Socialist bloc states are pre- paring a series of resolu- tions to condemn Israel at UNESCO's general confer- ence, which opened here Tuesday. Diplomatic ob- servers say these Arab and Communist states want to score a political victory against Israel so as "to wipe out the Camp David defeat." The extremist Arab states plan to condemn Is- rael for what they claim is its discriminatory policy in the West Bank and Gaza Strip's school system. The organization's director, Gen. Amadou m'Bow, is due to present a report asking the general. conference for renewed instructions fol- lowing Israel's refusal to permit a UNESCO repre- sentative to supervise edu- cation in the occupied ter- ritories. M'Bow has up to now re- fused to release a neutral report on the school situa- tion in the territories which in the main is favorable to Israel and has agreed to cir- culate only a brief summary from which all findings favorable to Israel have been omitted-. Israel's view on the educational debate is that the entire issue is pointless following the conclusion of the Camp David agreements, which provide for local au- tonomy in the territories enabling the local popu- lation to administer its own educational pro- grams. The Arabs also plan to rap Israel for allegedly disre- garding former UNESCO resolutions and continuing to undertake archeological diggings in the Old City. The Arab extremist states have reportedly prepared a resolution condemning Is- rael for the Ophel digs near the Old City's Dung Gate. They are also circulating copies of Israeli newspapers showing Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek accepting a $1,250,000 check from South African fund-raisers who are sponsoring the Ophel project. The Arabs apparently hope to mobilize the African states by show- ing that South Africa and Israel are "cooperating on the project." The diplomatic battle started as soon as the conference opened when the Arab-Communist bloc tried to force the conference to vote on its next chairman. Normally the executive committee agrees on a nomination. This year, it agreed name Canada's Napoleon Lab- lanc as representative of the Western group of states, to whom the office should go by rotation. For the first time in UN- ESCO's history, a secret ballot for the chairman's election is being called for by the Arab-Communist bloc. The Arab candidate will be Jordanian Minister of Culture Abdel Salam Majali, known for his anti- Israeli sentiments.
