Sukkot Symbolism Defined

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.)

The symbolism of the
sukka is based on the ex-
planation in the Talmud of a
biblical verse which states
that your generations may
know that I made the chil-
dren of Israel dwell in
booths, when I brought
them out of the land of
Egypt" (Leviticus 23:43).
One explanation offered
in the Talmud (Sukka 11b)
is that the sukka is a re-
- membrance of the "clouds of
Divine glory" which served
as a guiding factor in pro-
tecting the Israelites on
their way through the
wilderness after leaving
Egypt. The thinly sparsed
roof over the sukka thus
makes us keep in mind that
as precarious as our destiny
.seems to be in exile and in
wandering, the Almighty is
always overhead looking
down upon us and protect-
ing us with His love.
A second explanation of-
fered by the Talmud is that
these huts called sukkot
make us remember the
temporary shelters which
the wandering Jews actu-
ally lived in during their
travels through the wilder-
ness. Some take this to

mean that the Jew, by liv-
ing for the week in the
sukka, is always on the
alert and never surprised if
destiny makes him tear up
his roots and move onward
to another location, being
forced to do this by circum-
stance.

A third explanation of-
fered by some commen-
taries is that on Yom Kip-
pur the destiny of each
individual is decided by
Divine judgement.
Should it be the case that
some form of estrange-
ment is being ordained
for him, the Jew im-
mediately starts building
a sukka right after Yom
Kippur. For one thing, he
shows that he is ready to
accept the judgement of
the Almighty whatever it
might be.
For another thing; he has
in mind that if leaving home
was ordained for him he
leaves it right away for a
week so that the Almighty's
judgement can be im-
mediately fulfilled and he
can then return home with
security after the Sukkot
holiday since the judgement
has already been experi-
enced.

Generally, the sukka
demonstrates that the Jew
retains his faith wherever
he is — in a palace of luxury
or in a shack — the humble
sukka. Real faith is shown .
to be able to endure any-
where and everywhere.

Israel Shows Fuel Cost Cut
in Solar Energy Experiment

REHOVOT, Israel —
Thirty families living in the
Weizmann Institute's
Europe House now have all
their hot water needs
supplied by enclosed and
shallow solar ponds de-
signed by the institute's
photo-thermal conversion
group and located next to
the building.
The beauty of solar shal-
low ponds lies in their
simplicity, based on the di-
rect conversion of solar rays
to heat. This, of course, is a
well-known principle, but
institute scientists have
made it cost-effective by in-
troducing a new type of dur-
able plastic material to
cover the ponds, containing
special stabilizers and
anti-oxidation agents to
withstand the damaging ef-
fects of the sun's ultra-violet
rays for at least five years,
quadrupling the lifetime of
the simple plastics.
At the institute's
Europe House, water is
piped into the bags each
morning. At 3 p.m., when
a maximum temperature
of about 60°C is usually
reached, the heated
water is emptied into an
insulated storage tank
from which the 30
families' hot water needs
are supplied round the
clock. The system pro-
vides 10,000 liters of
water per day at an aver-
age temperature of 60°C
with fuel savings of 80

In the course of a year,
these ponds are estimated to
be a third cheaper than
standard flat-bed roof top
collectors used in Israel, and
are particularly suited for
large-scale hot water prod-
uction.
