John Pail NEW YORK (JTA) — Pope John Paul II, the former archbishop Karol Wojytla of Cracow, Poland, is an unknown quantity among Jews as he was for most Christians when he was elected Monday. Jewish spokesmen pointed to his anti-Nazi ac- tivities during World War II and to a belief that he may seek to press for more reli- gious freedom in the Soviet Union and other East Euro- pean countries. Rabbi Marc H. Tanen- baum, director of inter- *religious affairs for the American Jewish Commit- tee, said that the AJCom- mittee was sending its European director from Paris to Rome to try to learn the new Pope's views on Jews, Judaism and Israel and the status of Jerusalem. Tanenbaum said it is hoped that by taking the name John Paul H, the new Pope will be as understanding of Jews in religious affairs and on Israel as was his pre- decessor. He also stressed the importance seen in that Cardinal Wojtyla had been strongly anti-Nazi as a young man. Along with Wyszynski, he has become a leader in the Roman Catholic Church's position in Poland as the political opposition to the Communist government. At the same time, John Paul has been more conciliatory than Wyszynski and has actively promoted better church-state relations. Tanenbaum noted that the Pope's defense of lib- erty and human rights, as POPE JOHN PAUL II well as social justice, himself worked in a factory could be a key factor. He while going to school.
