Simhat Torah Soviet Jewry
Rally Slated for Sunday

The annual Simhat Torah
Celebration in Solidarity
with Soviet Jewry, coordi-
nated by the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit, will take
place at 11 a.m. Sunday at
Oak Park Major Park.
The activities will begin
10:30 a.m. at the parking lot
of Cong. Bnai Moshe. There
will be singing and dancing
by young people including
the Workmen's Circle Sun-
day School students and
Temple Emanu-El Youth
Group. From that location
there will be a march to the
park for the program.
Guest speakers include
Mayor David Shepherd
of Oak Park and Mrs.
James Blanchard, co-
chairman of the Congres-
sional Wives Committee
for Soviet Jewry. In addi-
tion, the United Hebrew
Schools Mime Group will
depict the plight of Soviet
Jewry and Kol Yisroel
Band will perform under
the direction of Mark
Goldenberg. There will
be dancing by the
Habonim Dance Group
and singing will be led by
Cantor Earl Berris, assO-
ciate cantor and youth
director of Cong. Beth
Achim.

Sami Esmail
to Be Released

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Sami Esmail, the Michigan
State University student
imprisoned here on charges
of being a member of Fatah,
is to be released "within a
few days," Israel television
reported Wednesday night.
A parole board Wednesday
decided to commute his sen-
tence by five months, the
report said. There had been
"heavy pressure" applied by
the U.S., the report added,
and U.S. diplomats ap-
peared before the board.
