growth, researchers found
appreciable differences be-
tween the "garbage-fed"
and control group plants.
Those given garbage as fer-
tilizer yielded two, three or
four times the fodder
yielded by control plants.

BEERSHEBA — Organic
household garbage may one
day help feed Israeli sheep
— not directly, but as fer-
tilizer for high-protein
salt-bushes.
Appreciably higher yields
have been derived from
bushes fertilized with gar-
bage in experiments run by
the Division of Plant Intro-
duction and Applied Ecol-
ogy of the Research and De-
velopment Authority at
Ben-Gurion University.

Dr. Meir Forti, chief re-
searcher at the division,
explained that garbage—
after re-usable metals,
glass and paper were re-
moved — was trucked to
Beersheba from a proc-
essing plant in Acre.
Beersheba garbage was
not used because there is
no processing plant.

It was then plowed di-
rectly into a plot of land
where several varieties of
salt-bushes were planted. A
control group of bushes was
planted, without garbage as
fertilizer.
Seeds of previous genera-
tions of the salt-bushes were
imported to Israel from the
U.S. and Australia 20 years
ago. In tests they proved
tasty to sheep, unlike other
bushes which were native to
Israel. The bushes are high
in protein content, so they
serve as good fodder.

Eugene Rostow, Pro-
fessor of Law and Public
Affairs at Harvard Uni-

Undersecretary of State:

"Many people don't realize
it but Israel has made a
most generous offer for
peace with Egypt: return of
the entire Sinai to Egyptian
sovereignty.
"Also, it has offered
Palestinian Arabs civil au-
tonomy in the West Bank
and Gaza. And Dayan has
said that Israel is ready to
negotiate with Jordan on
the basis of a partition of the
West Bank if Jordan prefers
a partition to a con-
dominium.
"All of which has been
granted unilaterally, prior
to negotiations.
"The call for greater Is-
raeli flexibility about the
West Bank is futile, since
King Hussein refuses to
make peace. What more
could Israel do to demon-
strate its flexibility?"
