Musical Series
to Begin Sunday

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

A LOT OF FUN . . .
much laughter and joyous
participation . This was
the recent 50th surprise
birthday party given for
Jerry Robbins by a very lov-
ing wife, Marge.
It was different „/not
the regular run-of-the-mill
kind of shindig . . . with
about 130 folks thoroughly
enjoying themselves at Por-
ter Street Station
downtown, which had been
taken over on a Saturday
evening for Jerry's big
event . . . (Porter Street Sta-
tion is ,available Saturdays
and Sundays for parties) .. .
Amid railroad signs, signal
lights and other railway
motifs; Jerry was sent mer-
rily on his way into another
happy year with a festivity
that Marge had planned six
months ahead.
The decor, other than the
colorful restaurant, was
almost all made by a very
ingenious Marge;\ who
toiled endlessly -with the
: various "plants" depicting
Jerry's "four vices" .. .
pair of dice, card hand;-little
bottles of-liquor and pic-
- tures of him with beautiful
girl cutouts from maga-
zines.
Even his fantasy was
fulfilled ... not Raquel
– Welch herself, but a
couple of lovely lookers
from the Dazzlers singing
and dancing group, who
came with his birthday
cake and to danCe with
him.
"Birth Of A Candy Bar"
in three large-card, story-
form with actual candies,
'was most clever, made by
Sandy Forman.
Plenty of music with the
disco beat all .evening . . .
food and drinks galore .. .
and even'a surprise gift for
Jerry . . . Looking into a box
given to him by Lorraine
and Max Green his eyes al-
most popped as he closed the
lid and said, "I don't believe
it!" . . . Opening it again,
Jerry took out his present
. . . a live goose on a leash.
The look in Marge's eyes
as she watched Jerry enjoy
himself all evening was of
endearing love . . . so beau-
tiful . . . so very wonderful
to see . . . Both are lucky to
have such fine friends .. .
, and most of all . . . each
other.
SI (SIMON) WEIN-
GARDEN, who recently
celebrated his 97th birth-
day at Borman Hall, is the
oldest former newsboy in
the United States . . . Also
once the bigg-est . . . Here-
tired at 78 after many years
in front of the Majestic Bldg.
(now First Federal Bldg.).
Si still works five hours a
day . . . packaging, taping,
etc. in the basement - work-
shop at Borman Hall.
In Los Angeles, former
Detroiter son Elm Wein-
garden is founder of a club
for people who want to live
to be 100 . . . It's called the
Century Club . . . organized

-

in honor of his dad, Si.
CORRECT SPELLING
is Jerry and Al Sipher .. .
Al-Mar Telephone Answer-
ing gents . . . Also their
mother, Dorothy Sipher,
living in Florida.
JOE SINGER, who cele-
brated birthday. number- 80
recently with his family
(children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, et•.)
at Antoinette's,, Telegraph
and Joy Rd:, should know
his food . •. . he was one of the
first kosher butchers in De-
troit . . . His Singer Kosher
Meats was on Dexter, and
then moved to Oak Park . . .
Party was given by daugh-
ters and sons-in-la* Phyllis
and Jack Attis and Lillian
and Seymour Gallant.
Good time was had by all
. . . happy with the food and
the very fine service by
waitress Helen Valentine.
BELATED BIRTHDAY
congrats . . . to Abe Shayne
on number 75 . . . to Babe
Wasserman . . . to Sue
Thomason . . . to Howard
Ball. - -
AT 67, SAM Koppelman
couldn't stand idleness
retirement wasn't for hint
after working since he was
12 years old . . . That's why
he's now selling cars and
trucks at Cook-Farr Ford,
10 Mile and Greenfield.
Fifty-two years ago, Sam
pumped gas for his uncle,
Sam Green, on 12th and
Philadelphia . . . Many folks
couldn't picture Sam "tak-
ing it easy" after 10 years
owning two Shell gas sta-
tions . . . W:-Seven Mile and
Lauder and W. Seven Mile
and Mendota.
SANDILAR, NEW
ladies designer shoe store
and accessories in
Applegate Square, North-
western and Inkster, has an
odd name . . . but with a
meaning insofar as lan-
guage is concerned . . . It is a
Hebrew word for
"shoemaker" or "maker of
shoes."
Owned by Stan Zerman,
the new shop has about 10
different designers display-
ing their latest . . . Sandilar
• in
• a top spot at Applegate
is
. . . right on the corner of
Northwestern and Inkster
.. and a most unusual lay-
out with almost all con-
cealed stock except for sam-
ples on display.
Carpeted sonic tubes
make up its fine-looking
decor . . . looking somewhat
like an outer space region
with accents of mirrors all
over .. • . plus spider-effect
track lighting . . . 60
tracks . . . Sandilar ranks
as one of the area's most
beautiful shoe and acces-
sories stores.
