On that score, he com-

the most urgent need for Is-

urgency of attracting youth

YITZHAK SHARGIL
Shargil, in Detroit for a
two-day visit last week in
the course of his American
tour with his wife, Devorah,
said the tensions caused by
war threats affected Israel's
economy, were responsible
for economic distress and
contributed towards the
yerida, the large number of
Israelis emigrating from
their homeland.
"We view peace as in-
evitable, and with it must
come a drastic decline in
the number of yeridim,
greater confidence in our
economic future and a re-
lationship that should
encourage trade between
Israel and her
neighbors," Shargil said.
The corruptions in
government ranks that
plagued Israelis two years
ago also were attributed by
Shargil to the tensions
caused by the war threats,
and he foresaw a return to
normalcy in the process of
peace-making by Israel and
Egypt as a start for an over-
all Middle East peace.
Expressing the hope that
a major problem, the shor-
tage of housing for young
marrieds, especially those
who had just completed
their terms of army service,
will be solved in an ap-
proaching period of lessened
fears from attacks by war-
mongering neighbors,
Shargil said the interest of
American Jewry is vital to'
the issue.
"The need for greater
understanding of our

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Commit-
tee has launched a new in-
formation program to reach
the large Spanish-speaking
audience in the United
States with news and com-
mentary of human relations
issues.
Announcement of the
program, which includes
the issuance bi-weekly
taped news commentary for
Spanish-language radio
and television stations, was
by Richard Maass,
president of the American
Jewish Committee.
Already, more than 50
such stations are broadcast-
ing the programs.
The taped commen-
taries, as well as written
materials aimed at the
Spanish-language press,
are prepared by Jacobo
Kovadloff, a native of
Buenos Aires and direc-
tor of Latin - American
Jewish Committee.
Kovadloff formerly di-
rected AJC's office in
Argentina, which was
closed last year following
threats on his life.
The American Jewish
Committee maintains an
office in Mexico City, which
carries out a broad series of
human relations programs
in Mexico and Central
America.
