History of Jewish Life in U.S.
Depicted at Beth Hatefutsoth

TEL AVIV — Three cen-
turies of Jewish life in New,
York are presented at Beth
Hatefutsoth in an exhibi-
tion entitled, "Beyond the
Golden Door — A Brief His-
tory of the Jews of New
York."
The exhibition, which
was inaugurated by Samuel
Lewis, U.S. Ambassador to
Israel, contains 700 ex-
hibits. These exhibits,
mostly photographs, were
collected from various
Jewish agencies, libraries,
institutions and collectors
in New York and organized
by Mrs. Mary C. Black,
painting,
curator of
sculpture and the decora-
tive arts in the New York
Historical Society.
"Beyond the Golden
Door" is divided into seven
sections, each devoted to a
different aspect in the his-
tory and life of New York
Jewry: entering, living,
prayer and learning, giving,
working, creating and look-
ing to Zion.
Even though the ex-
hibition covers a period
of more than three cen-
turies, from the arrival of
the first Jews in New
Amsterdam. in 1654 to the
present, the emphasis is
on the period of the great
immigration wave, from
the 1880s to the 1920s,
which helped skape the
modern Jewish commu-

nity in the United States
in general and in New
York in particular.
the Golden
Door" is the first in a series
of exhibitions, devoted to
different Jewish com-
munities all over the world,
to be presented at Beth
Hatefutsoth's Temporary
Exhibition Gallery.
Its presentation is accom-
panied by a series of events,
taking place in the Beth
Hatefutsoth auditorium, re-
lating to American Jewry.
The first of these events was
a lecture, accompanied by
slides, music and readings,
on "The Image of the Jewish
Immigrant in the United
States" given by Prof. Leon
Jick of Brandeis University.
Syrian Government
Newspaper, Tishrin:
Sadat has ignored the de-
mands of all the Arab states
to sever his direct links with
Israel. The summit meeting
at Camp David cannot serve
in any way the cause of a
just peace in the Middle
East; Sadat has bypassed all
possibilities that existed to
re-establish links with the
Arabs.
Any new call to discuss
reunifying the Arabs, tak-
ing the- Sadat regime into
consideration, can only be
- seen from now on as overt
collusion with the policy of
subservience to the U.S. and
capitulation to Israel.

To: The Jewish News

17515 W. 9 Mile Rd.

Suite 865

NEW YORK — Calling

the Camp David summit "a
manifestation of the good
that lies in every man's
heart," Dr. David Hyatt,
president of the National
Conference of Christians
and Jews, prayed that
"strength and courage be
given to all who work for a
world of reason and under-
standing" in a statement
celebrating the Jewish
High Holy Days, Rosh
Hashana and Yom Kippur.
Dr. Hyatt, a Roman
Catholic, said that the
Judeo-Christian spirit of
our nation "should serve as
a reminder that we cannot
permit the religiously prej-
udiced to distort the issues
or make bigoted -appeals to
hate."
He declared that Chris-
tians, Moslems, Buddhists,
and "indeed all religious
groups should join their
Jewish brothers and sisters
in penitent reflection and
pledge to overcome the
apathy, neglect and lack of
concern for others that
seems to be prevalent in the
world."
He stressed the need
for men to "come to see
more clearly not that
which divides them, but
that which unites them."
"Let us hope that the cel-
ebration of this New Year,
5739, begins a time of
mutual respect for human
rights, freedom and dignity
throughout the world," con-
cluded Dr. Hyatt.
