My friend who lives in
that part of New York
known as Greenwich Vil-
lage was telling me of her
surprise while standing in a
grocery store. She happened
to turn her eyes and behind
her, guess who was stand-
ing? None other than Mayor
Edward Koch. The New
York Mayor was buying
groceries too. He was stand-
ing there in his shirt
sleeves.
"So what?" I said. "Do you
know," I said, "that when
James G. McDonald, the
first American Minister to
Israel, pad his first official
visit to Israel after the es-
tablishment of the Jewish
state, he found Prime
Minister Ben-Gurion wash-
ing dishes in the kitchen of
his own home?"
To be sure, it may be said
that the Jewish state was so
poor financially that Ben-
Gurion could not afford to
employ a servant to buy his
groceries. New York is now
a bit financially embarras-
sed, but Koch still gets -a
pretty good salary and can
afford to get help.
Perhaps the mayor was
doing it to show his
democracy. Or it may
well be that it was for his
own sake — to keep the
pride of office from inflat-
ing his own ego and make
him aware of his identity
with the people.
It is told of President Ben-
jamin Harrison that he used
to go out every morning to
buy the groceries for
theWhite House. It was not
thought worthy of comment
then. Today, a President
would not likely go out for
his groceries for another
reason. There is the prob-
lem of security. A dozen
secret servicemen would
have "to accompany him to
the grocery store.
That, of course, was no
problem in the days of any of
the earlier Presidents of the
United States.
The other day, the Camp
David conference adjourned
for a day to give the mem-
bers a chance to visit Get-
tysburg. It was a token of
the great admiration for
Abraham Lincoln whose
name is of course inextrica-
bly bound with Gettysburg.
,Lincoln was the first

JERUSALEM — The fol-
lowing New Year's message
was issued by Yitzhak Na-
von, president of Israel:
"In this new year 5739 let
us turn our thoughts and
deeds towards the attain-
ment of the two supreme ob-
jectives of the Jewish people
in our time: -
Strengthening Jewishness
everywhere, above all
through education.
Strengthening Israel, above
all through aliya.
_"It is our central task now
to advance in determination
and dedication on these
roads of life.
"May this be a year of
peace for Israel and for all
the world; a year of creativ-
ity and deep gratification
for all of you."

4A,

President to be shot
down by a terrorist. John
Wilkes Booth and a few of
his comrades tried to re-
verse the course of events
which had led to the
emancipation of the
slaves.
Nasser, whose regime
preceded President Anwar
Sadat, is said to have once
expressed the desire to visit
Jerusalem but he was afraid
of being shot-on his return.
He was aware of'what hap-
pened to King Abdullah of
Transjordan. Abdullah, it
was known, was friendly to
Jews. He is quoted as hav-
ing said that God had scat-
tered the Jews over the
whole world so that when
they returned they would
help the Arabs in their pro-
gress. The Arab terrorists
didn't approve of such ideas.
Recently in Iran, the ter-
rorists were responsible for
the killing of several
hundred people. One of the
reforms proposed by the
Shah is the break-up of the
big landed estates. Probably
no single measure would,do
as much good for the mass of
people, but the terrorists
won't have it.
The term assassin derives
from the Arab hashish, a
drug native to the Middle
East. One wonders how
much drugs may have to do
with terrorism, but basi-
cally, it would seem, that
the roots of this plague of
terrorism is the want of
democracy in the Middle
East. The single democratic

country is Israel. In a
democracy things • are
agreed on by the people. No
individuals take it on them-
selbes to control decisions.
The fight on terrorism
is a fight for democracy
— and a problem for all
the nations. The man who
wrote the Declaration of
Independence under-
stood this.
It was Thomas Jefferson,
who, as ambassador to
France when the nations
were troubled by-the piracy
of the Barbary states, pro-
posed the organization of an
international army to com-
bat it.
