NE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEW YORK (JTA) — The Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) has initiated a massive campaign to collect signa- tures demanding American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The campaign, which was suggested by Rabbi Ale- xander M. Schindler, president of the Union of kmerican Hebrew Congre- ations, will continue through October in the 715 Reform congregations in the United States. The peti- tions will be presented to President Carter in early December. Rabbi Roland B. Gittel- sohn, ARZA president, em- phasized that "the cam- paign in no way expresses any displeasure with the Camp Daivd accords. On the ccintrary, we are extremely pleased with what can be a giant step toward peace in the Middle East and grateful for the role President Carter played in eliciting compromise on all sides. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt evidenced no diffi- culty in making an official visit to Jerusalem last No- vember. "When Egypt opens the first Arab embassy in Israel within the next few months, Mr. Sadat may be per- suaded to locate it in Jerusalem . — if the United States first establishes pre- cedent." Israeli President Yit- zhak Navon: Every citizen wants to fashion the state in his own image — religious, secular, capitalist, socialist . . . and one might think that the country would explode over such .dis- agreement. But we have two things uniting us, our history and our Torah. It takes time for Jews from 102 countries and speaking 81 languages to understand each other after 2,000 years of separate existence in the Diaspora. We fear that American refusal to rec- ognize Jerusalem as Is- rael's capital after 30 years will encourage the Arabs to push for a di- vided city, thus threaten- ing the peace process at some future date. By re- locating our embassy now, the United States would be heading off a possible stalemate later on." Gittelsohn also noted that Computer Finds Holiday Greeting RAMAT-GAN — The use of computers in making Jewish sources readily available to stholars and laymen is illustrated this year on the New Year greet- ing card of Bar-Ilan Univer- sity. The card shows a com- puter terminal and a greet- ing found by the univer- sity's computer in the Re- sponsa of the Chatam Sofer: "May it be God's will that the corning year shall be both good and sweet — a year in which He will raise _us from the depths of de- )air and cause us to climb .,rie path leading to the House of the Lord." The Rabbinic Re- sponsa Computer Project at Bar-Ran has for sev- eral years been recording rabbinic Responsa texts on computer tape for easy retrieval and re- search. This literature is a 1,500-year-old collection of case law dealing with real- life situations as they arose throughout the Jewish world and were dealt with by the rabbinic courts. To date the project has re- corded some 23,825 Re- sponsa. Something new to interest you.
