The Black basketball whiz finalized his conversion by going through the custom- ary Brit Mila, and visited a mikva in New York City and assumed the name Elisha Ben Abraham. Perry is on the way to his new apartment in the northern part of Tel Aviv. His intention is to apply immediately for Israeli citi- zenship which, of course, will include serving in the Israeli armed forces. The six-foot, 10-inch bas- ketball star explained, "I was too tall for the U.S. army but in Israel everyone has to do his part and I'm happy to become a member of the Zahal." Perry found that it was easier to become a bas- ketball star in Israel than converting to Judaism. He recalls that when the Maccabi team returned to Israel last year, after beating the Russians • in Belgrade for the Euro- pean Championship, 175,000 people greeted him and his teammates at . Ben-Gurion Airport. Ac- cording to Perry it wa s the high point in his life and possibly had consid- erable influence in turn- ing him towards the Jewish faith. When he finally . decided to make his move, his teammates gave him con- siderable encouragement, but the rabbis didn't. "I understand the rabbis' position in trying to turn me down. We Jews are very proud of our heritage and tradition and do not take Yeshiva Dean NEW YORK — Dr. Sid Z. Leiman, 36-year-old former senior scholar in Judaic studies at Yale, and visiting scholar in Jewish ethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown Uni- versity, has been appointed dean of Yeshiva Univer- sity's Bernard Revel Graduate School and direc- tor of graduate Jewish edu- cation. Dr. Leiman succeeds Dr. Haym Soloveitchik, who will resume full time teach- ing responsibilities after 'a one year's leave of absence devoted to research and writing. New Arab Friend NEW YORK — -Former Texas Governor John Con- nally helped put together the deal for Saudi Arabians Gaith Pharaon and Khaled Bin Mahfouz to buy the Main Bank of Houston. As one of the partners in the deal, Conally owns 15 percent of the stock. The voice of the people is as the Voice of God. Midrash being a Jew lightly. The rabbis turned me back do- zens of times before accept- ing me," Perry said. - His firstglIne as a Jew in Israel, on the Maccabi Five, came this week when his team opposed the Washing- ton Bullets, National Bas- ketball Association cham- pions, in a charity game in the Tel Aviv Sport Arena. With Perry in the lineup regularly, now that he is qualified as a Jew, the Mac- cabi Five figures to run away with the Israel Na- tional Basketball League title once loop play com- mences late in September.
