Synagogues Set Bnai Mitzva Education Standard

Sixteen Detroit congrega-
tions have joined in an effort
to raise Jewish educational
standards for Bar Mitzva
and Bat Mitzva ceremonies.
The congregations will
require their Bnai Mitzva
candidates to be enrolled at

the time of the Bar or Bat
Mitzva in some Jewish
school, such enrollment re-
presenting whatever
minimum number of years
the various synagogue
ideological groups require
for Bnai Mitzva ceremonies.

ELIE WI ESE!.

Dr. Julius Harwood,
chairman of the Bar
Mitzvah Standards Corn-
mittee, announced that the
assenting congregations
would make exceptions in
the cases of children in poor
health or where other such
circumstances exist. Con-
gregations also may elect to
permit the ceremony to take
place in other than the
usual Sabbath morning or
Friday night fashion, where
standards were lacking.
Dr. Harwood is tem-
porary chairman of a
committee which will
oversee observance of
these standards. The sig-
natory congregations
will meet shortly to elect
committee members.
Dr. Harwood announced
that the purpose of these
reinforced standards, many
of which have long been in
practice in some of the
ideological groups, was to
help congregations increase
the Jewish educational
levels of their young people.
Unfortunately, he said,
the Bar Mitzva dropout is a
widespread phenomenon in
American Jewish life.
Synagogues do not wish to
contribute to this weaken-
ing of Jewish education, at
the very moment when a
child ought to be affirming
his adherence to the reli-
gious standards of his
synagogue.
